CoolScan 8000 suddenly not recognized by OSX 10.3.5

Postby Dave McShane » Mon Nov 15, 2004 7:44 pm

Hi
I am suddenly getting a "scanner not recognized alert" on my Nikon 8000
running SFE-6.2.3r3(NikonM) on OSX 10.3.5. I also get it using Nikon Scan 4 but not with v**s**n which I am able to fully use as usual.
Tried deleting preferences, booting from a cloned partition, pulling other fire wire hardware off the bus and finally re installing Ai6 ... no change.

Suggestions appreciated!
Thanks
Dave

Dear Dave

am really sure what to make of this, however, on a first glance sounds like v**s**n is blocking other scan apps.
On the other hand, haven't heard of such a behaviour of v**s**n, yet.

Please check on background apps / processes running to make sure that this is not the issue.

Kind regards

Thanks for your response Sonny

It does seem like odd behavior as I had not run either v**s**n or Nikon's software in sometime, and the backup cloned partition with all three applications installed some time ago, should of worked
(I'd of thought) if this was purely a software problem.
I'll try uninstalling v**s**n and if that doesn't work uninstall Ai6 and Nikon and re-install Ai6 only and try again. I'll let you know the results later today.

Dave

Sonny,
Well after trying a few more things I completely deleted Silverfast,
Nikon Coolscan and v**s**n and reinstalled Silverfast first.
Starting up the first time I had no screen alerts, just a spinning beachball for several minutes then finally Silverfast launched and I've been able to use it ever since, with shorter lasting beachball spins (which never occurred before) each start-up.
I reinstalled Nikon software so I could recalibrate the scanner in hopes that it would help, which it seems to have. Though I don't know for certain.
One thing I notice with Ai6 is that sometimes when I load a holder it seems to travel in a bit too far and causes the scanner to make alarming sounds. The holder will then come out half an inch and thats when the beachball starts as well as the green light flashing on the scanner. Sometimes the green light won't flash.

Also unrelated to this current problem...
I use an Image Mechanic holder for wet mount scans in the 8000 and the holder when used with Ai6 always goes in too far and makes a very awfull sound which doesn't happen with Nikon or Vuescans software.
Suggestions!!??

Thanks
Dave[/u]

Dear Dave

how is the holder you are using labelled (is this original Nikon equipment)?
I am asking because I am afraid that it might not be supported by SilverFast.

Thanks for your follow-up information :)
Finest regards
Sonny

Sonny
The image mechanics holder is a modified Nikon (120) holder modified in only that glass has been expertly placed where the plastic film holding mechanism originally was.
