SFE-6.0.1D40 (DEMO) Kernel Panic Crash

We are interested in purchasing SilverFast Ai but we continue to run into the same problem with the DEMO (SFE-6.0.1D40).
Whenever we use 48 bit the prescan works fine but the scan causes a hard crash Kernel Panic which requires a restart. Adjusting some other features like the sharpness option does the same. We would like some info on wether this is to be expected or just a bug in the DEMO version. Our setup is as follows:
Power Mac G4 867Mhz
512MB RAM
Mac OS X 10.2.2
UMAX PowerLook III

please check the Umax web site (firmware update pages) for the latest firmware version for the PL III there.

UMAX's site does not seem to have a firmware page. I even did a search on their site with no hits. Any other ideas?
