What is YOUR scanning workflow?

Postby hassiman » Fri Dec 10, 2010 12:43 am

I have been scanning both B&W and color with my CoolScan 9000. I always scan at highest optical capacity so I set Q factor at 1 and both lpi nand dpi to 4000 and crop to frame edge.
For B&W negs I use negafix but scan one at 16 Bit Grey and another at 16 Bit HDR and I don't ne the IR channel for PS. Of course Negafix and all other adjustment are turned off when HDR (RAW) is selected. For Color transparancies I use 48 Bit Color ( with appropriate IT8 claibration for the film) and also make a backup scan using 48 Bit color HDR (RAW). I do all focus manually and use the AN 120 Glass carrier... for 35mm slides and negs I remount them in GEPE metal-lined mounts and that keeps 'em flat as a board.

I am still up in the air as to how best set the Black, mid tone and white points for the non HDR scans. What is the difference between the Black and white point picker tool located at the left edde of the preview frame and the Black/Mid/white icon located top left? When should one be used over the other? I have been using the top icons... first setting the black, then the white and am not entirely sure how the mid point should be used and when... any hints here?

Are there any Option settings that are pretty much "always use this" I know that when using HDR none of these matter anyway... but I am scanning each image both ways.

I noticed that Negs scanned as HDR show up as negatives.

Thanks.

The one tool located at the left edge of the preview window is an indicator of the lightest or darkest point in the image. The shadow and highlight tool located at the main settings window actually does set the white, black or grey points wherever you click on the image, it also helps you set the neutral point

.

That is correct, HDR scans are completely un-touched copies of your original material, hence your negatives show as negatives.
