Upgrade from 4000ED to 8000ED ? Need new version?

I'm upgrading from the Nikon 4000ED to the 8000ED. Will the Silverfast version I use now (v5.5), function with the new 8000ED or do I need to buy a new version?

OK, so today I get my new Nikon 8000ED. Installs in a breeze and works like a charm. I call Silverfast USA for a serial number.
"Sorry, you'll have to buy the 8000ED version for !!!$569.00, but since you're a former customer, we'll give you 15% off."

Thanks a lot Silverfast. How do you spell greed? Come on guys, the 8000ED version software is EXACTLY the same file as I use for my 4000ED. As a matter of fact it even functions in DEMO mode! To ask me to pay another $480 more AFTER I've purchased separate Silverfast 5.5s for BOTH my Nikon 4000ED AND my Epson 1680 is bloody robbery. Charge me an honest fee for the registration and serial number but don't pretend you're selling me another program!

Yes, the version for the the LS4000 and LS8000 is in the same file. But please notice, the additional $480 is not only for the new serial number. As the LS8000 is different from the LS4000, we had a lot of work to do to make it run with SilverFast.

And ... please don?t try to get illegal copies of our serial numbers.

Don't worry, as you can see by my previous purchases of SF5.5 for both my Nikon 4000ED and my Epson 1680, I don't use illegal software. My comment here is an expression of frustration with companies that I feel overcharge for software. I've put out a lot of money for my other two copies of Silverfast. Do I get a refund for my Nikon 4000ED software since I no longer need it? - doesn't look like it.

What I'm saying is that, because of what I would view as an inflated price for this software (particularly it's scanner-specific aspect), this definitely encourages software piracy. Most software companies have learned this by now. Like McDonalds -- you'll make more profit by selling 3 million burgers at 99 cents than 3 thousand burgers at $4.99!

I'm not trying to say your software isn't good -- actually, it's very good, but that your pricing policies here are aggressive to say the least.

When I look at the price of a competative product such as v**s**n (www.hamrick.com), for the price of $40.00, AND it functions on multiple scanners without re-charges or re-registrations, your charges look darn well predatory! All I want, (and I'm doubtful if I'm alone in this), is a fair price for my upgrade to the 8000ED.

PS. I have a registered copy of SilverFast v5.5 for the Nikon 4000ED scanner for sale for a reasonable price? - $99

PPS. Additonally, I actually have a MINT condition Nikon 4000ED scanner for sale -- $800 AND -- AND, I'll include the Silverfast v5.5 software for FREE -- now how's that for true capitalism at work?

I could not agree more. I spend an insane amount of money on Silverfast 4 and 5 for the LS 1000. Then I got the LS 40 and thought I could get version 5 to run on it at a modest update fee. Nope. So I have moved to v**s**n and have been happy ever since! Lasersoft is pricing themselves out of the market!

I'd honestly be relatively happy to pay THAT amount compared to $480 -- obviously! (Really Eric, I would!). The girl at the SilverFast company quoted me the latter higher price! You think she "misspoke"?
