This is my hardware/software setup:
- IBM T20 Laptop (512 M)
- Win 2000
- Photoshop 6.01
- Nikon Scan 3.1 (Runs perfectly fine)
- NEC 1394 Firewire PCMCIA card
- Nikon 4000 + SA-30 (roll film adapter)
I was able to use the SilverFast demo (either TWAIN or Photoshop) to overview thumbnails, but when time comes to scan, it just crashes after the "Measuring Exposure Time" dialog. Photoshop sometime reports error like "...acquisition API error"
or "...program error", but crashes most of the time.
Silverfast demo crashed Photoshop using Nikon 4000

Happens to me all the time and I use the registered version, 5.5.1r03
It is unstable on all the systems I've tried it on. So far Silverfast has no solutions, and seems unwilling to admit there is a significant problem.
For now, I've switched to v**s**n when i'm using the LS-4000. It does not, unfortunately have IT-8 calibration. But it does work very well.
I do own other Silverfast products and they are all stable.
