I have a problem with my SA 21 and SF5.5 while scanning slides on strips, the feeder crashes the program while trying to preview a slide while mentioning cannot focus.
I don't have this problem using Nikon Scan (never any faults like these)
Can this have anything to do with rotating the image with the software, in the preview?
Anyone else having this problem???
Xander

Dear Xander,
I had that SA21 holder with SF5.5 on Win2000 running all afternoon (testing). There is no problem related to the SA-21.
However, SF5.5 does appear to have problems when setting multi sampling to 8 scan passes per scan. The application quits with ERROR 0. Is that the problem you have, by any chance?
This failure only occurs with multi sampling at 8x and 16x passes. With every other setting the scanner works well.
If your scanner does not work well, please check:

Herr Kohler,
Two questions;
- Were you scanning positives, because negatives show no problem at all!
- Secondly I'am very surprised with the link in your answer, this is the first time I see these files to be deleted! Can't this be integrated in any uninstall?
Funny is that only Silverfast is having these crashes of the LS4000, no other scan program (Nikonscan, v**s**n) EVER crashed the LS2000 or LS4000 I have, NEVER!

Dear Xander,
I have similar problems with SA21, Silverfast (v5.5.0r07), Windows 2000, Nikon LS40. I did not update to the latest Silverfast version, because I did not found any note in the version history that this problem had been fixed. The problem I have is not so strong as yours, it is possible to scan images from stripes, but it seems at least difficult to scan three or more images in sequence. The software does not crash (in the sense what a software developer calls a crash), instead I get an error message that the scanner cannot focus or (e.g. if I switch of focus) that there would not be a film stripe in the device (a little bit funny, after the scanner had positioned the film stripe several times forward / backward). After clicking the OK button of the error message, Silverfast terminates. When I restart it, it tells me, that it does not find a scanner. It?s a magic trick: first the film vanishes and then the scanner. I have to switch the scanner off and on now.
The problem arises only at the final scan, not at the prescan (as far as I know yet). The situation seems to become better, when I switch to manual focus and select the point of focus carefully.
Since I bought scanner and software only a few weeks ago, and since most of the time I am scanning slides, the problem didn?t happen very often. So I am not sure, if it happens also with Nikon Scan or not.
Did you ever try with the FH3? Sometimes my scanner (or the software) refuses to recognize it.

True same problems here.
Starts with "can't focus", in a sequence of scans, and not on the first scan on the stripe.
Switching the scanner "off" and "on", to get Silverfast running again (or to eject the sripe) will only work once with me, after the second halt this doesn't work anymore (crash is not the right word)
I suspect this problem is not focussing, but the trouble Silverfast has to find the borders between the Positives, try the same thing with Negatives, and scan them as positives, Silverfast cannot find the borders, while programs like Nikonscan and v**s**n will! Also the Film Offset doesn't work properly.
With the FH3 there are no problems at all, and Nikonscan or v**s**n never had these problems.

I found a bug in 5.5.2 that might be the cause of your problem. Your message is dated July of 2001 though so you might have already solved the problem.
In the Options panel, if the 'High-resolution Prescan' value is set to anything other than 1, batch scanning of film strips (using the SA 21 in my case) will fail while *apparently* trying to set auto-focus. In my case, this bug was completely reproducable although it took quite a long time to pinpoint.
I'm using a Super Coolscan 4000ED with an iBook running Mac OS 9.2.x (and I can hardly wait for the OS X compatible version of 'SF-App').
regards
Gregory

There has been contact with lasersoft aside of this forum, through Nikon in the Netherlands and myself with Martn M?nier from Lasersoft, dating back a few month and weeks. Martin M?nier reproduced this bug, and confirmed it, they needed the help from Nikon. I never got an answer if it was really fixed, although I asked for it a couple of times?
Anyhow I haven't had any problems since I use 5.5.2d08.
But to be honnest I use, 9 out of 10 times v**s**n for RAW scanning with infrared clean! And then use Silverfast HDR for the next traject....
