Nikon 8000 users - Have you seen this problem?

Postby johnchiasson » Mon Jul 27, 2009 11:21 pm

Everything worked great a month ago with my Nikon LS 8000 ED (Mac v10.5.7) (SFv6.6.0) Ai Studio.
When I upgraded to SF's latest v6.6.1r1b, my preview scans (as well as final scans) exhibited multi-colored
vertical lines (this happens in 48bit Color, and 48bit HDR Color as well). I wonder if anyone has had this
problem or can explain it? Thanks. John

Dear John,
this indeed looks very strange, i have not seen something like that on the LS8k !
Is this a scan from a negative or from a positive ?
In general this looks like the scanner calibration went horribly wrong...

In another mail i noticed that you cannot delte the prefs via service menu, there were some installers with broken Universal Launchers, please re-download the 661r1b version and THEN delete the prefs to see if it changes the problem.

Best regards,

Dear Nils,
Thanks for your reply. The image is a positive. I have been working with Karl-Heinz Zahorsky in your U.S. Florida office. I did a "start over": trashed every file/app/plug-in associated with Nikon Scan. Also removed all SilverFast files, application and plug-ins from my system. (then emptied the trash and restarted computer to remove any trace). I then downloaded a new "demo" version of the latest SF Ai Studio and unlocked it with my purchased key. The "Service Dialog" screen is now working. I did a new scan using 48bit HDR Color, which naturally appears dark (the image posted in this forum is simply a 48 bit Color, not HDR, for illustration purposes). The 48bit HDR Color scan still exhibits the same vertical scan lines.

I agree with Karl-Heinz and you that the problem is pointing to a hardware problem (very possibly a calibration problem). But before I ship the scanner off for service, I will double check the firewire cable and connection integrity and whatever else I can do from here. One thing that worries me is that I forgot to close the front cover of the scanner around a month ago (it was mistakenly left open for a few days allowing any dust or "cat hair" to float in - dummkopf!). I did see step by step instructions on how to carefully clean the interior of the 8000. I may try that as well.

I should change this post "topic" to something like: "Nikon LS 8000 ED users - Have you seen this problem?" The way it currently reads insinuates that there is a problem with your great software ... which is not likely the case.

Best regards,

John Chiasson

Dear John,
thank you for the update, i did a check of a simple positive HDR scab on our LS8000 with the latest release cersion and it looked fine, so i really fear that something happened to your hardware...
But to be sure:
Did you try Nikonscan at a similar resolution to verify the striping problem ?

best regards,

Dear John,
I have exactly the same problem you had with your LS-8000 (multi-colored vertical lines).
I will be extremely grateful if you could tell me how you solved it.
Many thanks.

Dear Michel,

You might have not noticed, but this post is over six years old.

Have you made sure you are using the latest SilverFast release?

In most cases however colored lines unfortunately result from an internal issue in the scanner.
This can be an issue with the lamp or sensor.
Try contacting your local Nikon support. They often are able to tell you local companies who still service these scanners.

Kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.
