Gamma confusion

Hello,
as I've not used Silverfast since a few years (after having switched to digital) and now, that harddrives became so cheap, thought about transfering several thousand slides to the digital world using a LS5000 Scanner with slidefeeder.
I upgraded to the SilverFast Archive Suite and my idea was to do this as a one time thing, scanning everything with optimized settings and the highest possible resolution.

I came about some issues:

As my standard image tool I use Lightroom. Is there any way to browse HDRi files in Lightroom and "send" them to Silverfast for the dust removal and other work to be done? It's possible with other programs to "link" them to Lightroom to get a kind of integration.

If I uncheck the Gamma for HDR output the files are far to dark for any imagebrowser but VLT. Again, it's not possible to do the basic file management in Lightroom, because here every image appears dark. If I check the box, image browsing is possible in Lightroom but VLT sees everything too bright....and still it's not possible to integrate Silverfast as a so called external editor into Lightroom

Setting the expected Gamma 1 in Silverfast HDR at least seems to be the correct setting to handle such files in Silverfast HDR. Is this correct? Are there any ill effects integrating the Gamma setting into the HDR-file?

I can set the resolution to 8000dpi but the technical resolution of the LS5000 is only 4000dpi. Is this a bug?

When setting the resolution to 4000 for the archive scanning, is there any significance in the settings for Q-Factor, Raster, Size in cm? I just wish to capture anythging the scanner is able to for the archive.

Is there a gold standard of settings for archival scanning?

No, HDRi raw files are to be edited with SilverFast HDR, the infrared channel can not be read by any other application. Trying to edit or open any HDRi picture on a different application might corrupt your files, especially the infrared channel.

Yes, it is correct

As a matter of fact all HDR files or HDRi files have this linear gamma value of 1.

No, it is not a bug, it is the nominal resolution given by the scanner manufacturer, the 8000 dpi is an interpolated value.

Just leave the slider in 4000 dpi and do not touch any other of those values. 4000 is the "Optical" resolution given by the manufacturer and the scanner driver.

Not really, different people use different approches for this task.

sorry to say, but before answering that way and ask people to read FAQs or do forum searches, maybe you should read the questions....

I'm well aware that it's not possible to edit HDRi images in Lightroom and I did never attempt, nor did I ask about this....
All I was asking was if there is a way to use Lightroom for browsing and organizing the files and link Silverfast as external editor.
Frankly speaking, the functionality of Silverfast is great, but I'd like to avoid VLT, which I think is very old fashioned and a real pain to use if you are used to Lightroom or similar programs to organize your work.
From what I can see the problem is that it's not possible to start Silverfast directly but you have to go via the Silverfast Loader. If there would be a trick to start Silverfast by selecting a file and then chose "...open with..." in the finder, this most likely would do the trick for Lightroom as well.

BTW, I thoroughly searched the forum for ways to link Silverfast to Lightroom but did not find hints that really helped.

From what I can see the problem is that it's not possible to start Silverfast directly but you have to go via the Silverfast Loader. If there would be a trick to start Silverfast by selecting a file and then chose "...open with..." in the finder, this most likely would do the trick for Lightroom as well.

Well, theoretically you should be able to tell Lightroom to use SF Launcher as an external editor but it would not do the bypass of VLT.

I have added your idea to the feature request list. This might be considered for future versions of SilverFast HDR
