error in scan start, cannot meassure exposure values

I,ve been using Silverfast now for 5 months, My scanner (ls40) hasn't worked for longer than an hour in a row untill now. Believe me Ive tried it all. diffrent versions of photoshop in different os versions (mac OS 9.2 and X.1.2). Installing uninstalling and even a full clean install on my no-problem Imac, it's the same problem over and over again. I'm on my 4th download upgrade version by now. I even had my scanner fully checked at he nikon-importer ( in the Netherlands). They saw no hardware problems. If I look around on this forum I see more people with similar problems. Any of you with this problem had it fixed? If yes please contact me.

All I can think of now is a usb-connection problem or again software-related hick-ups.

Have you submitted a problem report to LaserSoft with the log files ?

Yep they're the ones that advised me to look into the hardware thing

a couple things to try. The Nikons usually want to be the only device on the bus. Have you tried installing on a different machine ? Does the scanner work on your machine with the Nikon software ?

nikon scan or competitor v**s**n are no problem. I'm not satisfied with nikon software and can't seem to get accostumed to v**s**n. If and when SF works I'm very pleased with the possibilities.

Any of you ever had usb-connecting problems?

v**s**n and NikonScan are different in how they access the scanner. If they are working there is nothing wrong with your scanner or the interface. i suspect the problem is on the Silverfast side, as i believe they use the Nikon libraries on the Mac. BTW, are you using NS3.1.4 and firmware 1.20 ?

to cure the error message "can not measure auto-exposure" with any current version, I found it quite helpful to turn off the Auto Exposure button(wich is the yellow lightbolb icon at the side of the preview window). turning it of does not make a big difference and you can tur it back on for most of the following scans.
for "can not find scanner" message, I first close photoshop and than restart the scanner.
but of course I work on XP using a coolscan 8000 ED so I can not definitly say if this will work for you too.
it seems to me that all these problems got to do with silverfast because with other software like nikonscan everything seems to work fine. unfortunately I get the far best results with silverfast so I have to work around all the bugs somhow.

not using ns, due to possible errors. The nikon firmware was upgraded when checked for hardware probs x thanks for the thread I'll contact Martin L.
