Q. Are we supposed to quit SilverFast after ejecting one roll of film, and then relaunch it after loading the next roll of film into the scanner?
Yes up to ver. 6.0.1r12 <- this version can recognize change of film holder. However, SF only recognizes that there is a new holder, the preview frame will not be adapted, as this can only be done with human intelligence (by the user).
On the other hand, it is almost impossible for the film position to be identical every time it is inserted into the holder so the current prescan may be useless most of the time.
You mentioned clicking Prescan to recalculate the film position. Does this also reset the thumbnails in Overview? If not, does SF ever delete the previews and thumbnails or do they just keep piling up within the SF folder? I have seen the previews for SF HDR stay around for a lonnnggg time.
Yesterday, I found that the following procedure went pretty well:
- Eject the film
- Close the SF Plugin (leaving SF App running seems to be problem-free)
- Delete all of the Previews and Thumbnails from within the SF folder
- Load the next roll of film
- Re-open the SF Plugin
- 'Trash' the current selection frame to reset the frame data using the Frame-Trash tool
- Select my preconfigured Frame Set
- Select my preconfigured Settings set, and then
- Click Prescan to force the recalibration of film positions
Whew! What a procedure, but it seems to work well.
Note that I use Frame Sets and Settings heavily. Are these saved within the Prefs files for each plugin? If so, it should be apparent that I don't like the idea of having to delete the prefs files to solve some of SF's problems.
Could these settings be saved separately to the main plugin preferences?
