Auto-dismiss "Batch End" dialog.

Postby milstone » Sun Nov 03, 2002 1:14 am

Nikon Super Coolscan 400 ED, SF-200 batch scanner, Mac OS9.2, Silverfast Ai 5.5 with iT8.

The "Batch End" dialog displays after finishing a batch and requires user intervention to dismiss and return the computer to a functional state. Can this "feature" be defeated (I really don't need to know what this dialog box tells me) or at least set to dismiss automatically?

I want to initiate a batch scan, leave the computer and have the computer revert to a functional state without user intervention after finishing the batch.

Related- Is it possible to modify SF Ai to allow the computer to perform other applications while scanning? I know the answer to this question in the past has been "no" because of the manner in which SF Ai runs "within" Photoshop. However, it seems this remains a worthwhile goal, especially with OSX capacity for multiple processors and preemptive multitasking (I think).

Thanks.

Allowing other processes to run

Postby Gregory C » Sun Nov 03, 2002 7:54 am

This is only a problem with OS 9 because SilverFast is in effect a Photoshop plugin which must run in the foreground with full attention from the CPU.

When running in OS X, all other processes get access to the CPU. This is why I use SilverFast in OS X where I can batch scan film, listen to music, surf the 'net and do one or two other things all at the same time without interference from any of the running processes.

Gregory

Thanks. I take it you are running Silverfast/Photoshop native in OSX, not in OS0/Classic within OSX. My computing system is currently between OS 9 and OSX. For various reasons the scanning computer is still OS9: perhaps not for long. Is there any way to accomplish the same thing in OS0?

There may be.

Before opening the SilverFast plugin, open a Finder window or a window from another application and place the window in a position where it will be visible even while the SilverFast plugin is active.

After SilverFast begins its batch operation, click on the background window. This frequently brings the background app to the front and allows access to the rest of the computer while the modeless app runs in the background.

Let us know how it goes.
