I have searched and examined many image cataloging solutions (for the Mac) and have yet to find one that can serve my needs.
I am in the process of scanning negative film. I am scanning at 4000dpi hardware HDR resolution and plan to archive the images on DVD-RW or DVD+RW along with screen resolution corrected images for reference. I need a cataloging software that provides the ability to link the screen resolution images to their full resolution HDR original images. When I click on a screen resolution image, the program shows me where to find the original.
There are also occasions where the catalog will include the negative images. At these times, it would be preferable that the catalog be able to invert and balance the image (accuracy not required) so that I can see the image and its contents.
Any comments or suggestions? Perhaps some of the veterans here have developed their own methods for archiving and referencing HDR negative images.
Other requests.
1. LT should ideally be able to store its reference files and catalogs in a user-defined folder. This folder may sometimes be on a removable drive or even on a disc for permanent archiving. For example, I might store the LT catalog for 20 DVDs of images onto a CD-RW that I keep with the DVDs as a type of index. In this case, it would be preferable that LT would know which DVD each of the photos is on. It might also be necessary to allow the user to drag-and-drop a folder of images onto LT to have the images added to the catalog.
2. We need the ability to add or remove comment word/s from multiple selected images with a single action. When doing so, we would hopefully be given the choices of whether to add the comments before or after any existing comments. Without this ability, making meaningful and useful comments for hundreds of images is near impossible because it would require far too much time. Imagine the scenario where you want to comment the names of the people within the images and the places where they were taken. With this requested ability, I could select all of the images with my wife present and then click this function to add 'my wife' to the comments for each of the images. I could then select all of the images with me in them and click this function to add ', Gregory' (with or without the comma) to the comments for each of the images. A function to add the date and time of the image to the comments from the EXIF information might also be useful (especially after I get my hands on a Canon EOS D10 ;-)
regards
Gregory
