SFSE - High contrast from colour negs

I am getting very high contrast scans from Kodak Gold 200 colour negs using a Dimage SE 5400 (not version II). Is there an adjustment I can make? The gamma is set at 2; should this be changed? Is there any document or paid-for publication available which is specific to using SilverFast SE that I can download? Help would be appreciated.
