Soft Banding on 120tF / SPrintscan 120...Any solutions yet?

Postby Nitrofunk » Fri Sep 23, 2005 7:52 pm

Hi All!
Although this issue has been discussed several times, especially with the Polaroid Sprintscan 120, there hasn't been a solution yet.
I've attached a MF-Scan (scanned with the 120tfs Glass-holders, so the Neg was perfectly flat!) that shows this phenomenon: There is a strange Soft-Banding in the scans which results in visible softer grain/details. I've enlarged those areas and marked them with a red line around them.
The only statements I've read from Lasersoft that they didn't have this problem with their Scanner (but it HAS to be there, since so many users have complains about it). And the Microtek support said that this has to be a software issue.
So my suggestion to solve this issue is to help ourselves! Let's throw in every theory that can cause this banding and discuss them. I personaly think that it has to do with the 120tf strange carrier mechanism: Since you have to force the filmholder in, the mechanics might wear out over the time and might cause uneven transport - that shows up in those soft areas.

Any other Ideas?

Just checked a scan with Microteks Scanwizard software: No banding at all. So it has to be the Silverfast-software that causes the issue...

Which firmware level do you use on the Microtek?

I think about flashing the latest Microtek level 1.70 into my Polaroid SS120...

Apparantly upgrading to Microtek 1.70 does not solve the "soft banding" issue, does it?

My question in the Polaroid section seems to be answered with this...

Dear Mr Willms

I hesitate to agree. At least we and Microtek had differents results, cf. <a href="https://www.silverfast.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3028&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15">my posting</a> in another thread.
Still I asked our developers to double-check this once again.
