I just received my new Epson 4870 scanner today and when I tried to upgrade SF to the SFE-6.2.0r6 (Epson-SE).exe (per the flyer that came with the bundled SF CD) I get an error message telling me that the setup files are corrupted.
I submitted an e-mail to support with no answer yet, However it was just a short time ago. Anyway, I thought I'd ask here if anyone has had the same problem.
I'm running windows XP, with AMD 2400+ (2.0Ghz) processor, 735 MB ram 80 Gig HD, all the regular stuff, shut off the Norton firewall to download ...... I did have the SF version (SF6.???) that came bundled with the scanner installed. Should I have un-installed it before attempting to open the upgrade? There were two other programs that I down-loaded OK. They were SF-movies and SF-Docs.
Any ideas would be welcome....Thanks in advance...Gary

I had a similar problem on install. It involved an InstallShield problem and I was unable to uninstall old versions or install new versions. To be fair, I think this involved a problem with the Epson software that was written by Newsoft - not Silverfast. I fixed it by going to InstallShield's homepage and downloading an update version and installing that. I believe it was an ikernel.exe file update.
In regard to Silverfast itself, you must first delete all traces of any previous version before installing any updates. Once I did that (including any old directories and references), things worked fine.

Hi Sascha,
I have re-downloaded the SE version of SF (saved to disk). After uninstalling the old version (SF-6.2.0r5) I tried to open the new SFE-6.2.0r6(Epson-SE).exe and I still get the same error message as before "The set up files are corrupted" I also un-installed the Document program and the Movie program before trying to open the updated exe file.
Can you shed some light on exactly what the "Set up files" are? Doug Fisher has indicated a possible cause of the problem. Any thoughts?
I am using comcast.net as a service provider, it is broadband and I have very few problems with them. Thanks, Gary
Hi Doug,
Thanks for your reply about the installshield update possibility. I went to their website installshield.com but don't see any reference to downloads of updated programs. This is the first time I have had any problems with downloading programs using this computer and XP (about 9 months now) so I suspect that there is some other glitch, but who knows. Ha
Thanks, Gary

Third time's a charm!
Hi Sascha and Doug,
I have sucessfully installed the SFE-6.2.0r6(Epson-SE).exe files and the program seems to be working fine.
The sucessful third try was after I had uninstalled the three programs, Silverfast, Docs, and Movie and I saved to a different file than the default file.
I then shut off all programs that were running, including my Norton antivirus/firewall.
Going to the download page, I carefully checked all the required buttons which reflected that I had the originad CD that came bundled with the Epson 4870 Photo, and I have the Photoshop plug-in option, and the SE version.
I performed the downloads, one at a time, choosing the "save to file" option.
I noticed that it took somewhat longer (2-3 minutes) to download the program file this time than the two other tries, so I went back to the second download (which was in another folder) and found that the size of the exe file was only 239KB which was much smaller than the third try which was 4.28MB (4180MB).
With all programs still disabled, including the Microsoft internet browser, I navigated to the exe files ran them and the installshield programs worked normally.
I'm now up and running, I've unlocked the new version with my s/n that was on the original CD and I've scanned a picture using Silver fast.
I don't have any specific ideas as to why the first two times didn't download the complete file, but computers do have their unknown reasons for doing things. Right?? And it sure could have been operator error as well!!!HA
Now all I have to do is learn this new program and the parts and pieces of the new Epson scanner!
Thanks for listening to me work my way through this. Gary

You probably had a communication error or timeout with the server that caused your browser file save dialog to terminate and close the file early. i have seen this randomly when the net gets congested or a server gets overloaded. We have had the former over the last few days with all the worms tunneling around. No fault of yours. Just check the download size vs the posted file size each time and you will catch it.
