SF 6.4.4r3fg does not function w\4990

I upgraded to 6.4.4r3fg a few days ago and find, after one successful scan, that I cannot scan anything. After 2/3 of the way through the first of four multi-sample scans, the program quits and I receive the message "An error occurred at the start of the scanning process. Scanner not ready." Clearly the scanner was ready and was quite a ways into the scan.

Yes, I disgarded the old prefs file, so that cannot be the culprit. I am connected with the 4990 through firewire to a Mac G4, dual 500 with 1.3 gb RAM, system 10.3.9.

Needless to say, any suggestions would be welcome.
