Randomly Losing Scanner

I've been having this problem off and on over the last couple of months, Silver Fast SE will stop seeing my UMAX Powerlook III, it says no scanner found. The only way I can get it to see it again is reinstalling the software. Usually I have to delete and reinstall it a few times before it starts working again. I check all connections each time when this occurs. Any help would be much appreciated.

Do you have another scanner connect to the same computer? How about a multi-function printer (Copier; scanner; FAX; Printer)?
