Problems starting Silverfast Ai and SE

Hi,
I just bought a new Epson 4870 Scanner, which was bundled with the Silverfast SE software. It will not load from Photoshop CS, or as a stand alone.
I then purchased the Ai version, SFE-6.4.0r9c ,by downloading (dialup). It behaved exactly the same way. It would not load as well. The error message in Photoshop is that "photoshop has encountered a problem and has to shut down. "The message when trying to launch as a stand alone is "SF Launcher has encountered a problem.."
Can someone advise me? I have sent an e-mail to support for help.

do you have a webcam installed if so unplug it and then see if things work
