Problem installing Nikon Coolscan III

Postby Fordyce » Wed Apr 26, 2006 9:44 pm

I own a Nikon Coolscan III scanner with SCSI connection. I use Lasersoft AI6.
This scanner was functionning perfectly with my old computer with a Pentium III processor and WindowsXP.
I now own a new computer with a AMD Athlon 64 x 2 3800 processor.
Impossible to install Silverfast AI : "Scanner not found" while the system recognizes the scanner, the SCSI card and the ASPI layer are OK.
I got no help from NIKON who says that their scanner is not compatible with Windows XP SP2.
I tried Hamrick v**s**n software and, at first trial, everything worked fine.
Does anyone met similar case.
I am not prepared to discard my Lasersoft.
Help will be appreciated.

Dear Michel

please try the following: Copy the WNASPI32.DLL from the
C:\Windows\system32 directory additionally to the directory where the executable file that calls up SilverFast (the Photoshop plug-in / .8ba file) is located, e.g.
SF_Launcher.exe in C:\Program files\LaserSoft\SilverFast(NikonSF)
or
photoshop.exe in C:\Program files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS

The reason behind this is an odd behaviour of Windows that no longer looks for the WNASPI32.DLL in the system directory as it should, but limits its search path to its current directory.

This is known to happen with AMD 64 CPU systems which are installed on a Nvidia Nforce chipset mainboard and with NikonMAID driver scanners. But it may help you, too, so I guess it's worth trying :)

Thanks for the reply.
I did exactly what you advised but to no avail. I have tried with both the standalone version and the Photoshop (elements) plugin.
The version of Wnaspi32.dll used is 4.71.2.0 do you think it is the correct one ?
I am very surprised to see that Viewscan scanner software works perfectly under the same circumstances. Why ?
I cannot believe to be the only one suffering such problem.

Dear Michel

please don't hesitate to contact support: https://www.silverfast.com/problemreport/en.html
Please send an SF_Logfile along when your request is confirmed.
How to help support staff to help you: https://www.silverfast.com/faq/1058/en.html
AFAIK v**s**n doesn't use the Nikon library, but accesses the scanner directly. Seems to help in this case.

run aspichk to verify correct install of aspi layers.

can you disable your cpu's second core ?

make sure you have the latest bios, chipset drivers, etc from the mobo manufacturer installed.

Thanks Degrub for your help.
I do'nt know how to disable one core, however I'll study this solution.
The bios has been updated three weeks ago.

What do you mean by that ?
