Demo version freezes on installation. OS 9.1 / Photoshop 7.0

Postby MM » Mon Sep 16, 2002 12:13 am

I have downloaded the demo version of Silverfast 6.0 several times and haven't been able to install it. The installation freezes every time at a point when the user is supposed to pick a location for the plug-in. I get a message that I have several copies of Photoshop (not true, I have only one) and my only pull-down choice for installing the software is Adobe LiveMotion. I have no way of navigating to the Photoshop folder and attempts to install it in the LiveMotion folder are unsuccessful. The process stops and the only way out of the installer is to force quit. Please help. I'm trying to test the software with my Nikon 8000ED. Thank you.

Please contact the support team at "support@silverfast.de" with a complete description of your problem, including your system (I guess your are using a MAC operating system).

Thanks Eric.
I sent an e-mail to the tech support yesterday. Just curious, how long does it usually take to hear back from them? Thanks in advance.

That depends on the number of problems, they have to solve.
My advice: if you don?t hear from them within two or three days, send and EMail again to remind them.

This is really discouraging, it's been almost a week since I emailed tech support and I have not heard from them. After the first email I sent another one just asking if they ever received my original message - no response either. I understand that they might be busy, but the company that asks for their software almost one third the cost of the the US price for the Nikon 8000ED scanner could invest in creating a script that would automatically reply to incoming emails. Just let us know that you are working on the problem and will get back to us as soon as the problem is resolved. Is this too much to ask or are you simply not interested in my business? After all I want to try your software (I'm interested in buying it) not to waste my time, but because I think it offers a lot more than the original Nikon software included with the scanner. What is going to happen when I am a registered user and should experience problems with it - am I going to have to wait forever to hear back from you?

I have a solution for anyone who has had problems installing the software on a Macintosh running OS 9.1. It is very unfortunate that the German tech support never got back to me and was obviously not interested in helping me. Hopefully they will read this and change the minimum system requirements for the software.
CarbonLib was the culprit. OS 9.1 comes with CarbonLib ver.1.1.1 which is insufficient for the installer. The minimum version of CarbonLib for the installer to work is 1.2.5, but users who have LiveMotion with the Twain plug-inn along Photoshop 7 will be able to install Silverfast in the LiveMotion folder only (no way to navigate to the Photoshop folder). The answer for people running Photoshop 7 and LiveMotion on OS 9.1 is CarbonLib 1.3.1 or newer. This version allows the user to chose between Photoshop or LiveMotion for the destination of your plug-in. So my guess is that CarbonLib 1.3.1 should be mentioned as one of the minimum requirements for Silverfast Ai 6. Hope this helps.

Hi MM!

No way even with 9.2.2 and CarbonLib 1.6, i have also Streamline 4 on my disk and the installer showed only my hardisk per default, so i installed in the Streamline plugin folder and moved it afterwards to the PS plugin folder. Anyway it?s a bug but as long as it finally works....

regards
Wolfgang
