Correct upgrade installation method to save setting & da

What is the correct method to install upgrades so that settings and VLT albums and data are not lost?

Currently the best would be, to copy the whole SilverFast folder (near the Plug-in) as backup, deinstall all, install the new update, and try to recopy the backup.
