Ai Studio upgrade

Is it recommended to remove the previous Ai6 before installing the downloaded upgrade to Ai Studio or should I just overwrite?

It depends on how old your previous Silverfast version is. Overwriting usually works, but some older version 6 releases store the Silverfast plugin in a place where the new installer won't find it.

Basically, if you still only see the older version on your computer after running the installer for the latest version, you have to uninstall.

Please keep in mind that Photoshop only looks for plugins at startup. So if you had Photoshop running in the background while installing Silverfast, Photoshop will still use the old Silverfast version, until you "quit" Photoshop and start it up again.
