Hello
I can't install SilverFast Ai, Version 6 on MacOS 9.2.1 using the SF Launcher (D-2.1.2) because something goes wrong. Instead of startig SF the following error message occures (translated from German):
******
Error during Import.
The System returns this error when loading the plug ins:
USBManagerLib
OK
******
I am working on a Mac G3 with a Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL using the SCSI interface.
Istallation of SilverFast run without any troubles.
A week ago I had made a request for support to the company. Unfortunately, till today without any reaction.
Does anyone know a solution?
Many thanks in advance.
Norbert

Dear Sonny
No, it doesn't.
The reasons are:
1) I am not working with the scanner's USB interface (I am working with the scanner's SCSI infterface).
2) My Macintosh G3 doesn't have any USB interface, thus the operating system software wouldn't install any USB system extension.
The installation of SilverFast run without any troubles but when I start the SF Launcher the software asks for a system extension that makes no sens.
Yours,
Norbert

Dear Norbert
actually, the driver's is requesting the file. And it is a combo driver that needs some other weird things, too (e.g. setting a free and compliant SCSI ID even when working with firewire or USB).
Hm, I don't know yet how to go along this when you cannot install the USBmanagerlib, but I shall find out.
Meanwhile, please try if updating to OS 9.2.2 eases the problem:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75288
Also, please check if installing and running Microtek's Scanwizard will work (as a cross-checking reference).
Fine regards

Dear Norbert
a solution to your problem of not being able to install the USB support had been presented in Apple's OS 9 user forums.
I updated the FAQ entry accordingly.
However, as the USB drivers from that package seem to be not appropriate for 9.2, probably the upgrade to 9.2.2 is the better solution.
You could also contact Microtek support if the same trouble occurs with Scanwizard, because then it's definitely driver based and LaserSoft Imaging will be unable to do anything about this issue.
Best regards

Dear Sonny
Hm, if you think this system extion is needed by SilverFast even if there is not USB interface than I think the best way will be to get it and put in manually into the system folder. I will be looking for it too.
Microtek's ScanWizard is running well. There is only a little problem with the TWAIN plug in. The Photoshop plug in is working without any problem.
I will update too if there is a German version on Apple's homepage. Perhaps you are right.
Yours,
Norbert

Dear Sonny
I have updated to MacOS 9.2.2 because there has been a Geman updater on Apple's web site.
The result is as expected: On my computer (G3, beige) each installation process installs the USB system extension USB Authoring Support only because this computer does not have an USB interface.
Using TomeViewer I found the following USB system extensions on the MacOS 9.2.1 updater or MacOS 9.2.2 updater respectiverly:
? USB Authoring Support, D1-1.1.2
? USB Device Extension, D1-1.5.6
? USB Mass Storage Support, D1-2.1.1
? USB Printer Sharing, D1-1.0.2
? USB Printer Sharing Extension, D1-1.0.2
? USB Software Locator, D1-1.5.6
? USB Apple Monitor Module, D1-2.1
Even if I did not found a USBManagerLib as requested by SilverFast I installed all of them and tried to start SilverFast after having turnd off printer sharing in the controll panel.
It runs!
I was able to register the software and to work with it.
OK, there are some other problems as
? to be very slow compared to ScanWizard Pro or
? to do everything right but printing a white page or
? to like to crash,
but these topics I will discuss under another subjects as needed.
If somebody knows that a MacOS 9 system extension called USB Manager Lib exists indeed, please let me know under this subject ? perhaps it will make SilverFast more stable.
Yours,
Norbert

Dear Norbert
I guess these were the suspected files - thanks for trying out my suggestion.
However, as this is classified to be a driver - not a SilverFast - problem, also Scanwizard should have run into the very same trouble.
I shall investigate internally when I manage to find the time.
Have a smashing weekend
