Scanning using "16 bit HDR grayscale" creates a file that does not have a thumbnail when viewed using Explore (Windows XP Pro) with the "View" set to "Thumbnail".
When I scan using "48 bit HDR colour", the file created has a thumbnail that is displayed in Explorer.
Is this a limitation of the "16 bit HDR grayscale" mode or something else?
Thanks,
Mike

Dear Mike -
Just I try to find your problem. I used Win XP, Photoshop 7 and created a "16 Bit HDR grayscale" and a " 48 bit HDR colour " image with SilverFast. Both files have a thumbnail which is displayed in the Windows Explorer ( Desktop ) So I don?t know what is the difference. Please describe exactly step by step under which setting your problem occurs. Which imaging program do you use?
with regards
Christoph

No thumbnails w 16 bit grayscale scans saved in tif format
Christoph,
Let me give you more details. I have completed further testing to better document the behavior. I used Window XP Pro with all updates installed, Photoshop 7.0 and SilverFast Ai v6.0.1r46 for the testing. I am using an Epson Perfection 2450 Photo scanner. All files were saved as tif files with no compression.
Scan Mode 16->8 Bit Grayscale--thumbnail present
Scan Mode 16 Bit Grayscale--no thumbnail
Scan Mode 16 Bit HDR Grayscale--no thumbnail
Scan Mode 48 Bit HDR Colour--thumbnail present
If I save the files as psd files (retaining 16 bit channel), the thumbnails are present.
When I first noted the problem of the absent thumbnails, I was scanning using silverfast in the standalone mode and saving the files directly to disk without any other processing. The behavior is the same using SilverFast as a standalone or with Photoshop 7.0.
Are you able to duplicate the behaviour I have outlined above?
If it would help, I could send you sample image files.
Thanks in advance for your assistance,
Mike

Dear Mike -
I couldn`t duplicate this behaviour you described
I recieve always thumbnails. By the way, this is not a SilverFast problem, but a Photoshop problem, because Photoshop creates this thumbnails. I am using a Windows XP Home version, but I can?t imagine , that there is so much difference. Try to increase the memory of Photoshop - perhaps it works.

Christoph

I have been working with Microsoft Support on this issue. I emailed a 8 bit and a 16 bit grascale tif file. They verified that the 8 bit had a thumbnail and the 16 bit did not. Could there be a difference between XP Pro & Home?
I would like to email you the same files and see if you can duplicate the behaviour.
Thanks,
Mike
