stretched images -help!

I'm having a problem scanning negetive strips on our Howtek 4500 drum scanner.

Things seem fine in the preview window, then also fine when I scan the strip at say 300dpi, then when I kick the resolution up to 2800, 2000, or 3000 I get a distorted image, all stretched out horizontal with some of the end clipped off like it was stretched off the frame.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

The scanner is hooked up to a Power Mac 7100/66 running OS 9.1 and the latest version of Silverfast plug-in with photoshop 5.5

This happens in batch mode (file) and single scan (file), saved across a 10 base T network.
