New user, where do I begin??

I have very recently purchased a PF 1800 Silver scanner using Silverfast SE 5.5 to scan hundreds of old family Kodak Kodachrome color slides. My first attemps returned less than satisfactory results, thus my visit here. I am reading a lot about issues with older slides and NegaFix errors/updates. I need to get going on this project and could use some feedback on what/where to start to better understand the hardware/software. Thanks for any comments
