Multiscan, Epson 1640su and should I get a new scanners

Postby ljkuzel » Tue Mar 23, 2010 1:02 am

I downloaded the trial of Silvefast Ai Studio and made a few test scans in mulitscan mode. I did one with 1 and 8 scans and I do see somewhat of a difference, but not a great difference. I did try 16 scans and I'm not sure I couldn't see much of a difference at all. Would I see more of a difference between single and multiscan images with a newer scanner (say the v700), beyond what the 1640 is capable of doing? I do realize I would be much better off with a new scanner with all the improvements since this one was made, but $$ is tight right now.

Dear ljkuzel,

Image noise is meant to be perturbation of the signal during its conversion from analog to digital within the scanner. It is more likely to happen with more frequency and stronger at the darker parts of the picture.

Multisampling is a noise reduction method that uses a median filter. It considers the neighboring pixels and the variation in every pass to calculate the average.

The more passes it makes the better it works. But your scanner quality and ability to produce noise are also a big factor as well as the image itself

A scanner with better optics and sensor will be able to capture better details and probably produce less noise than an old (or a cheap) scanner.

Since there are a couple of variables to consider (and some are not even pertinent to the scanner itself), it is difficult to tell if you would see the difference with a different scanner but I believe you might.

Cheers

I do understand the benefits of multiscan as well as the benefits of a new scanner overall. My problem is that with the hardware I have now is I'm not seeing a great difference that would justify the purchase of Ai Studio over Ai

I guess my question is if I get a new scanner, will I see more of a difference between 1,8 and 16 pass scans to justify getting Ai Studio over just Ai. I'm just trying to get an idea if I do have to spend money I don't have on a new scanner will Ai Studio make it an even better investment.

The reason I'm wondering is that I can get Ai6 with the Epson v750 vs the v700 which doesn't include it. I might just get the v700 and buy Ai Studio if the difference justifies it.
