Multi-exposure

Postby sgoetzin » Sun Aug 03, 2008 6:49 pm

I do have the Silverfast 6.6.0r1a version in combination with the Nikon Coolscan LS9000.
Is it possible to use the multi-expousre functionnality to expose the first scan for the highlights, and the second scan for the darks.
Would this work if the resulting file has been specified as a 48 bit HDR file.

If this doesn't work, what would an alternative solution ?

Thx,

Serge

Dear Serge,

Multi-Exposure works in a similar way as described by you in your posting. The first exposure is done at a normal speed, it will give a first image properly exposed for the medium and highlights.
The second exposure will be done slower (2.8 up to 4 times, depending on the scanner) than the speed for the normal exposure; in this way, the noise produced in the dark areas will be reduced and more details will be recorded.

The resulting information, of course, has to be written in a 48 bits HDR file so the enhanced gamma value can be recorded (remember that normal computer screens are not capable of displaying 16 bits color files, so you have to make sure to select the right segment of the gamma value to be displayed by your photo editor).

An alternate solution would be to make two different scans with different exposures and then combine them with your favorite editor.
