iSRD scanned photo is poor quality compared with preview

Postby melbury » Sat Feb 25, 2012 9:00 am

Hi, I need some advice

I am scanning 35mm negatives at 225 dpi

In preview of iSRD all looks good - but the final image is poorer qulaity - where am I going wrong?

The attached file shows preview in SF8 and on right shows imagein windows viewer - you can see dust remains on the face cheeks for example.

Why does it look so good in preview then poor in final scanned file?

Hope someone can help :)

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike

Could you please post a screenshot of the resulting file to illustrate your point?

Thank you

Hi Alejandro, If you scroll to the right you can see the resulting image in windows viewer - it looks the same in Adobe lightroom as well. I can send you the actual file if you wish ? or I can try and scan at different resolutions and send you these - please advise

Thanks
Mike

Hi melbury

I downloaded the picture and saw the resulting file, it is not really very clear due to the low res.

I would like to determine if this behavior is relative to the scanning resolution. The infrared channel in the scanner does not have the same resolution as the rgb channels and I suspect the problem might lie here.

Could you please make a test to see if the situation changes with different scanning resolutions?

Thanks in advance

Kind regards

OK, I've done some more testing.

The problem only seems to appear when a batch is processed. I scan a strip of 6 negatives after copying frame settings to all frames and one (or more) will have very poor correction compared to when it is processed individually.

Is there a way I can get you high res images / screenshots? You have my contact details on file.

Could you run some batch tests at format 6 x 4 and 225 dpi on a strip and see if you get consistent iSRD

Thanks
Mike

You can upload the pictures to dropbox and send the link for us to download them

I will run some tests here to see if this issue can be reproduced.

Thanks for your info

OK, this is a bach of 6 frames.

All the tiff are the scanned results - perfromed by copying settings to all frames

If you look at (4) you can see the 'mark up' on the face clearly - the repair has not been doen well.

If you look at pdf it shows what silverfast 'sees' at iSRD

IF I export a singel image it's OK

When I scan a batch I seem to get these 'random?' poor quality images.

Hi Melbury,

I got access to your pictures, thanks.

I tested this issue and could reproduce the problem as described. I have reported this for bugfixing. In the meantime I suggest you try to go 1:1 overview on each of the pictures before performing the batchscan. In that way corrections will be correctly done.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Kind regards

This is great news :D I look forward to a fix.

How will I know when it is fixed? as I have thousands of negatives to scan and woudl like to do them in groups of 24 to save time.

I'm running on the trail version 8 (I have full V6.6) and would like confidence it's fixed before purchasing the upgrade; I have been waiting in the hope I could use iSRD on a batch and it is now so very close...

Do 'bug finders' get free upgrades ? :P

Thanks

Actually if you do not use 1:1 preview you will not have this issue, or if you do the 1:1 preview on all 24 pictures.

No, not really.

HI,

I've re-scanned batch without 1:1 preview and still find approx 33 % images are showing the iSRD defects in grey on the final image.

If I do preview on iSRD - how do I then move to next frame to preview next?

Thanks
Mike

Hi I tried to reproduce the problem myself twice and iSRD always worked correctly.

You turn off 1:1 preview, then select the next picture, go into iSRD and activate 1:1 preview again.

Thanks Alejandro

Do you test with the same scanner I have?

As I cannot get successful batch scans with no preview.

Look forward to update.

Thanks Mike

Just repeated test with latest 8.0.1r7 and I still get over 50% images with greyed defects showing when I do a batch scan with 'no preview' on iSRD

Look forward to an update

Thanks Mike
