Hello-
I am a newbie so please forgive the dumb question. I am scanning archival historic photographs. I am using silverfast AI which came bundled with my epson 10000 scanner. I want to scan at 16 bit color.
Does that trnslate into 48 bit on the silverfast menu? It is the only option on the menu that I see. Anything less goes to grayscale.
How can I tell on the tiff file that I save what the scan type is?
I have photoshop on order but in the meantime I am using Photoshop Elements, which supposedly does not work with 16 bits, yet it is opening up the scans Ihave done with Silverfast with no problem and allows me to edit them. However when I use the same size using the Epson software, elements will not allow any editing.
Why could it be that Elements is recognizing the silverfast scans at 8 bits?
Thanks-
Mannypinky-

Re: Getting low resolution 600 dpi at 48 bit
Dear Mannypinky,
48 bits = 16 bits per channel x 3 channels (red, green and blue).
I do not really quite get your question. If you tell SilverFast to scan TIFF, your resulting file will be TIFF. Is that what your question means? or you want to know how can you specify the bit depth?
Perhaps you are using the scan mode 48->24 bits which means your resulting files will be 8 bits and not 16 bits.
I guess someone at Adobe would be more indicated to answer this question.
Cheers

I meant, where within the tiff file will it say what the bits are? Is there a way outside of photoshop to tell once the scan has been created within some generic image opening software besides photoshop?mannypinky wrote:I have photoshop on order but in the meantime I am using Photoshop Elements, which supposedly does not work with 16 bits, yet it is opening up the scans Ihave done with Silverfast with no problem and allows me to edit them. What scan mode should I use within Silverfast besides that to give me 16 bits? There is no other choice. You said above that 48 bits = 16 bits per channel x 3 channels (red, green and blue). I do not understand what mode to use if I want 16 bits on this edition of Silverfast. Do I need an upgrade in order to get 16 bits?mannypinky wrote:Why could it be that Elements is recognizing the silverfast scans at 8 bits?
I meant that to illustrate that another program is recognizing these scans as 8 bits instead of 16 bits, and I wanted to know why, and how to indicate within the Silverfast program that I want 16 bits, not 8 bits.
Thank you for your help!

Re: Getting low resolution 600 dpi at 48 bit
Dear Mannypinky,
Under Mac I could not find a way. Under windows you can right click on the file, select properties/advanced and it will display if it is 24 or 48 bits image.
You should already have the option of scanning in 48 bits, you can change the scan type to 48 bit as indicated in our user manual (pg. 71).
Perhaps you did scan your pictures in 24 bits (8 bits per channel mode) normally that mode will be displayed as "48->24 bit color". If you digitized your pictures using that scan type the resulting files will be 8 bit depth.
Cheers
