Dull greens from calibrated scanner

Postby Julia » Sun Feb 20, 2011 10:11 pm

Hi all.

Hope you can help or I'm back to the camera, instead of my new scanner, for any images with greens in! I have a HP8300 scanner. I've done the auto IT8 calibration and the 'SF_R (HP Scanjet 8300)' profile is listed correctly. I'm embedding Adobe 1998 and using photoshop Adobe 1998 colourspace. I'm scanning positive fine art images using Win PC (monitor profile ICM).

All greens appear dull generally. Blue, Red, yellow are fine (Pretty good matches). But greens appear muddy and always duller and bare no resemblance to the rich vibrant greens being scanned. I wish i could blame my monitor but i've tried viewing the scanned images on other machines and printed them with the same result. The greens are truly awful. I've eliminated my monitor as the problem and this issue appears to be at the scanning stage.

So my question is .. What would cause all the vibrant greens to be lost? To give you an idea..

My vibrant green (approx near here)..
R: 111
G: 179
B: 83

is actually getting scanned as muddy grey/green..
R: 114
G: 133
B: 115

Can anyone help please?

Rgds

Julia

Hi Julia,

out of curiosity, how are you getting the values you've posted of the greens?

Hi LSI_Morales

I'm using the eye dropper in photoshop to click on the green in the scanned scanned image. Then using the eye dropper to choose the nearest match to the original artwork. Although I could post a photograph and the scanned image if that will help?

Thanks

Julia

Dear Julia,

Thanks for the explanation. Its a bit difficult to tell how precise your measuring method is.

Back to your original post.
One reason why it might appear as though greens are not as vivid as the original image appear to your naked eye, is because scanner (and photographic devices in general) can not see the same color spectrum human vision can.

I believe the colors your picture have (which you perceive as vivid) lie outside the color gamut of the device.
