Controlling the Contrast

Postby DieWo » Mon Mar 15, 2010 10:47 am

Hello,

I'm new in scanning my family slides and happily I succeeded in scanning the first some 200 slides. I'm using Reflecta DigiDia Scanner and SilverFast directly with the launcher, I don't use Photoshop. I am scanning in batch mode since I have approx. 5000 slides and can't adjust every single slide separately and manually.
But I wonder how one effect can be avoided: Some slides with a wide range of contrast, eg. persons with some degree of back light, result in heavy contrast which means e.g .the fasces are too dark.
On the other hand, some slides with landscapes have little too contrast and seem to be plain.
I would by happy to find out which of the many set screws of SilverFast can be used in order to adjust it for both cases.
Please give me a hint. Thanks a lot in advance.

Best Regards
Dieter

Dear DieWo,

In such cases you should open the options panel and go to the "Auto" tab, then deselect the option Automatic when ADF and auto contrast.

The pictures you are describing are all too different some already have a huge contrast others have a reduced contrast, The automatic controls will just try to find a median for every picture.

I would suggest you read chapter 5 under Image Auto-Adjust (5.1) and Histogram (5.3) of our user manual, there you will find the basics of how the automatic correction tools work in SilverFast.
