Cleaning the Scanner

Postby snapperanton » Sun Jan 02, 2005 12:01 am

Hi

I have an Epson 4870 scanner, it's great. I am always scanning neg/transparency and am plagued by dust. Obviously there are many software features to lose the dust, but still, it's always better to start as dust free as possible.

Does anybody have any glass cleaning techniques for this scanner, that won't destroy it?

1) raise the local humidity to around 70 % Rh to keep dust down. Turn off any A/C or heater blowers temporarily.

2) get a "dust buster" film brush - it has a spec of polonium in it that removes the static, IIRC, from surfaces and helps minimize the attraction of dust. Use an antistatic dusting cloth on the glass and scanner body as well.

3) Ban tissues, toilet paper (unless magazine quality :D ) , paper towels, pets, etc from the house

3M Microfiber Cleaning Cloth

Postby defiantm » Thu Mar 31, 2005 8:45 pm

I have the same problem, my house is very dusty. Go to your local walmart and pickup a cleaning cloth that is made for camera lenses. It is made by 3M they are not easy to find in the store usally. I'd look in the RX section where they have travel supplies and look next to the reading glasses. If all else fails just ask someone in that department for a:
3M Microfiber Lens Cleaning Cloth
they are lint free and scratch free, machine washable you can wash them like 500 times!
Here are some tips for you:

Never put pressure on the outer seam or it could scratch.

Never use on wet or damp surface or it will release the oils that are being held in it.

Never wash with fabric softner.

Always wash with hot water.

Let me know if you can't find it and I'll help you find them somewhere else.

I don't practice cleaning my printer by myself because I don't have enough knowledge about that. The only thing I do is that I bring it to computer clinics to have it clean there. I would like to know about cleaning that device, so that it would not be too hassle bringing it there. I always consume time.
