4x5 w/V500 matching scans/settings for photo merge

Postby afripix » Mon Aug 17, 2009 4:34 pm

hello,

i'm using a V500 for scanning 4x5 have to use photomerge and need the scans to match exactly for it to work correctly. my question is, is there a way to save all the settings applied to a scan exactly so that subsequent scans can match? i've done saves of settings and it doesn't work for me. i scan half the neg, save the scc info, and curve info, etc. but then when i go to scan the second half of the image i can't get them to match at all. i've had better luck using epson scan which holds the settings if you don't alter them, no need to even save, but if you do save it works. this software as complicated as it is should be able to do this easily.

help greatly appreciated as i'm on deadline and bought this for greater control over this exact issue and now i'm having to revert to epson scan.

thank you.

Dear afripix,

I advice you to scan in 48 bits HDR mode which will create unmodified raw files of your originals, you can then in photoshop or camera raw make the necessary adjustments and then jump to Photomerge.

so you're saying that i should make no adjustments in LSai? what is the use of all the software controls then? i don't know if you're understanding me, is there no way to scan a negative, save the settings and apply them to subsequent scans? when i save and change the default under options from "silverfast" to my settings, shouldn't the next scan after pressing "prescan" have those settings applied to it? and if so, it should look exactly the same as the previous scan if it is the same negative.

Dear afripix,

I understand your point, however it is very difficult for me to tell, because there are settings which are image specific (e.g. automatic correction), it works according to the content of the image, very similar to the exposure meter in your camera, for every picture there is a different exposure and histogram.

Most likely there lies the reason why they do not match, because you might be applying some settings specific to the histogram of the portion of the image you are scanning first, when you apply those settings to the other portion (different histogram), then it will affect the image in a different way.

ok, so what do you propose? any suggestions based on what i'm trying to do? or just suffer? this is sort of absurd, the crappy software that came with the scanner works better than $100 LS.
