My HP ScanJet 8300 seems slow
I recently purchased an HP ScanJet 8300, using Silverfast SE with a Mac G5/ OS 10.3.9. The first scans seemed fine but when I started scanning at higher resolution the scanner became very slow. For example a 11 x 17 color image scanned at 150 DPI (about a 6mb TIFF) took 39 seconds, a 11 x 17 color image scanned at 300 DPI (about a 30mb TIFF) took almost 2 minutes but a 11 x 17 color image scanned at 600 DPI (about a 125mb TIFF) took almost 6 minutes! That is a long time if you have 50 scans to do! So is it the scanner? Is it SilverFast? Does this seem slow in comparison to other scanners? How can I make it go faster? Thank you for the help.

Dear Dave,
The times you post are normal, the higher the resolution, the larger the amount of information the scanner has to process. There is nothing you can do to accelerate this process.
Cheers

Re: My HP ScanJet 8300 seems slow
thank you for the reply! I had some wrong information in my post- the sizes were not correct:
8.5" x 14" 48-24 bit color @ 150 ppi = 39 seconds
8.5" x 14" 48-24 bit color @ 300 ppi = 2 minutes
8.5" x 14" 48-24 bit color @ 600 ppi = 6 minutes
maybe you still agree these speeds are normal yet I am wondering is it normal for just the HP ScanJet 8300 or most scanners? Do you know of a faster scanner? Has anyone ever done any speed tests for color scanners? There should be a standardized speed specification, like pixels per second, but there isn't. Thanks!

Dear Dave,
The scan times you have published are normal for that size of material. It is more or less common to all flatbed scanners, you might find many slower scanners and few which are faster. Perhaps Epson might have a faster scanner but the difference might not really be that big.
Cheers
