Silverfast SE not 100% twain-compatible ?

Postby Mark669 » Fri May 30, 2003 9:54 pm

Hello Silverfast-Team,
I just bought Silverfast SE 6 for my flatbed Umax Astra 1200S.
I have Win 98 SE.
Calling the silverfast twain driver from Paint Shop Pro 6 is functioning. The scanning is very fast and the scan results are good.

But I`ve a problem using the twain driver from my new bought photo-scan-software "Foto-Scanner" from Data Becker (see www.databecker.de). This program brings an "twain scan error" in the calibrating phase when chosing the silverfast 32bit twain-driver. The message occcurs after the silverfast-process-messages "Searching devices" and "Initializing" have appeared on the screen.

When I chose my old VistaScan-twain-driver, then the calibrating ends correctly.
So it seems, that the silverfast twain driver isn?t 100% twain-compatible, am i right ?

Is there a chance to solve this problem ?
If I shall send you a copy of the program "Foto-Brenner" for analyzing the problem, just tell me.

I would be very glad, if you could help me.

Thanks
Mark

Dear Mark,
the difficulty with TWAIN is that it is NOT a true standard, and it depends on how accurate a host application can communicate with SilverFast TWAIN. If the host application is not able to feed SilverFast witht certain - mostly color management related - information, the communication might fail or cut of inbetween.
LaserSoft Imaging cannot fully guarranty compatibility with all existing TWAIN compatible applications.

Hello LSI_Engelhardt,
thanks for answering me.
Seems, that there is no chance to run my photo-software with silverfast, it`s a pity.

Maybe the "Data Becker"-Software-Support-Team can give me hints, but I guess they`ll say, that silverfast is no original twain driver and therefore not supported. But I?ll take a try.

But what is fantastic with the silverfast driver is that it?s 2-3 times faster than the original Umax Vistascan 3.1 ! Scanning Using "Descreening" with Vistascan 3.1 is very slow and loud but not at all with silverfast, that`s fine - seems that the programmer of silverfast programmed very tricky !

OK

Bye

Mark

It looks like "Foto-Scanner" doesn't uses the user interface of the TWAIN data sources, but uses it's own UI to setup the scan parameters and then uses the TWAIN data source in a "no UI" mode (surpressing the own user interface of the TWAIN data source, setting the parameter for the scan and doing the scan via the data source).
This "no UI" mode is not supported by SilverFast, as SilverFast is mainly a scan software with built-in driver and not a merely driver.

"Foto-Scanner" is not an imaging software (like Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop, from which you can use SilverFast), but a scan software. You have to decide which user interface and image enhancement options you like most: the ones from "Foto-Scanner" or the ones from SilverFast.
