Line art scan to PS 6 is blank

When scanning line art to Photoshop 6, the result is a black screen. My version of Silverfast is 5.5.2r25, Umax 1120 scanner. I downloaded an updated version, 5.5.3r17 but it will not accept my password. Any help appreciated as I have contacted the support team twice and got no reply. 3rd time lucky maybe but I'm not holding my breath.
