Will Fuji Provia IT8 calibration work scanning Velvia?

Postby hassiman » Fri Jun 12, 2009 10:00 pm

Hi,

I was just wondering if the Fuji Provia IT8 calibration target would give good results when scanning Velvia film? I would think it would be closer than the Kodak target would be. Anyone tried this?

Dear hassiman,

Yes, it would give good results, even with the Kodak targets you would obtain excelent results. However you should not forget that "Kodachromes" are a quite different emulsion which have to be calibrated separately, for this reason you can not use a Kodachrome IT8 target to cailbrate the scanner for digitizing your fuji slides, that should be done with other target (Fuji or Kodak).

How about for tungsten E6 films, like Fuji T64? I realize that there's not much of this film around anymore, but I have a lot of it that I'd like to scan, and am wondering if this software will scan it well before I decide to purchase.

Dear Imokruok,

So far i know there are no IT8 calibration targets for tungsten films, however you can calibrate your scanner and then select the white point to balance your tungsten film.

So there is no advantage (and no reason) to buy a Fuji IT8 target for scanning Fuji slide film?

The prices to produce the Fuji targets are much more expensive than those of Kodak (The raw materials are more expensive).

Sorry, that was not my question.
I will try to ask again:

You said that Kodak calibration targets can give "excellent results" with Fuji slide film.
But my question is: will I get better colors if I use the Fuji calibration target
for scanning Fuji slide film?

I am using the standard Kodak Ektachrome IT8 target that came with my Plustek
scanner, and I get "faded" colors every time I scan Fuji slide film, with the result
that I always have to increase saturation or manipulate the colors, to get a natural
result with Fuji slide film. I thought maybe the reason for this is the Kodak IT8 target,
so I want to know if I should buy the Fuji IT8 target to get better scans and colors
when I scan Fuji slide film.
