What does the Auto checkbox do in the film select dialog?

What does the Auto checkbox do in the film select dialog?

Can someone please advise me what is the purpose and behaviour of the "Auto" checkbox in the dialog in NegaFix where you select the film type. This is not documented in the manual or addenda as far as I can see.

I have an Epson 2450 scanner and am using SF SE 6.01r44 on Windows 98.

Dear mctaylor.

If the auto checkbox is checked on, then SilverFast calculates the best parameters (highlight, shadow) automatically, if you change (resize or move) the scan frame.
