Negafix needs these enhancements...

Postby nicol_verheem » Sun Nov 27, 2005 2:45 am

I have spent more time, effort, and money on calibrating Fuji Reala on my Canon 9950 than is acceptable. And I'm not happy yet ! I shot a GretagMacbeth color checker under studio lights, with a handheld meter, using various Canon L prime lenses and exposure settings. I scanned 8x preview, draft quality disabled, with a warmed up lamp.

I'm Still not happy with the results I get in AI Studio IT8.

It would have been a lot easier if Negafix had the follwing enhancements :

1. Bigger dropper : I have a big area available for each color patch, and averaging out more of the pixels would have been far easier and more consistent. Ideally should be able to edit profiles with a high res, multiscan, not only preview.
2. Auto Disable ALL auto correction/contrast/color settings when editing profiles. Even if I'm scanning 48b HDR I can still see I'm fighting auto something, and this gives me inconsitent results. Not sure what I should change, but it makes sense to me that the software should be clever enough to disable everything that can interfere with the editing.
3. Export / Import raw data point to / from excel or similar spreadsheet. I often need to nudge a point just slightly - using the graphical tool to do this without adjusting the points around it proved impossible.
4. More pipets (I needed 6)- with adjustable sizes : See 1.
5. The logic behind the smoothing often fails - and I end up with one channel running along the edges or making strange snake like patterns.
6. More Undo levels in editor. I would make 4-5 adjustements, then do a smooth curve, only to find some value kills the logic (see 5), and the only way to undo is start over.
7. Undo frame position/size changes.
8. I often killed SF is to close the Negafix dialog box after editing a profile. I did this by accident a few times if I wanted to see something behind the floating box. Stack dump said 0xc0000005 @ offset 10097704.

Like another poster, I fail to understand why the positive equivalent of the IT8 process can not be automated. If I use a standard color chart, like the Macbeth, with controlled (or known light), the process of determining a profile for the film emulsion/scanner combination should be easy to automate, and much more acurate than the graphical editor. I would gladly pay for this feature like I did for the IT8 target and s/w.

SF6 is a great product, but negafix (and batch scanning) needs some work to make it more friendly/predictable/consistant. I can sense a lot of power under the hood, but the automatic gearbox does not do the engine justice :-?.

Sorry for venting so much. :x I included a picture to show where I differ from SF on the Reala profile : the SF profile hass to high midtones. The avg RGB valuyes for the 6 grey patches should be ~243,200,160,122,85,52.

The silverfast profiles looks like this

Please offer any advise you have. I have lots of work ahead still it seems.

Thanks
Nicol

Dear Nicol,

thanks for your appreciated input and don?t worry about venting :-)

I have the 9950F sitting on my desk here and I will analyse your results with the Fuji Reala. We are also trying to find out whether the Preproduction model we have differs from the final production models. Our production model should arrive any day soon and than we can find out.

Your enhancement suggestions will be forwarded to the developers for evaluation.

I will get back to you with further results.

Thanks for now,

Jan
