KODACOLOR II/CII, AGFA XR 100 and Negafix dialog

Hi,

I couldn't find any place for negafix profile requests, so I'm posting this here.

These are two types of film that I have, and for which I couldn't find a profile. I suspect that they are covered by existing profiles, but I don't know which, since one never knows the 'canonical' name of a given type of film. For the Kodak one, I have two reasonable guesses (Kodacolor), but even those I don't know which profiles they correspond to, if they already have.

So here they are:

In fact, it would be great if Silverfast would use 'canonical' names for the profiles, and one might look up (online?) what types they correspond to. The problem is how to define 'canonical'. I think for each type someone knowledgeable would have to determine it. Let's say it's 'Kodacolor 100 Gen 4'. The online database would have:

   Name: Kodacolor 100 Gen 4
 Labels: KODAK GOLD 100-4
   Type: SF
Formats: 135, 126, 110
Stripes: Magenta/Green


This is just an example, I think this type is only 135 (SF is as opposed to MF or LF, which I suppose always used their own emulsions). Stripes of course only apply to 135, I think.

Which takes us to the negafix dialog. While it is well organised, I don't find it very useful when you don't know or don't have the correct profile and have to try different ones to see which matches better. For instance, you almost always know the brand and ASA, it's the rest that may be tricky. It would be nice to have the following layout:

The Brand and ASA comboboxes would be independent. They would restrict the list inside the Profile combobox. So one could go through all the Kodak films, or all the 100 ASA films, or all the Kodak 100 films. I suppose less common ASA and Brands could be under an '<Other>' entry.
I think not everyone may like this new layout, but it would be great to have it as an option.

This question has been posted many times and is not easy to come accross any reliable information on the internet (specially since this changes from manufactuer to manufacturer). With Kodak it appears the important part is the four digit number.

I have performed a research on the internet, the problem here is that there is a lot of speculation about this but no information published by Kodak itself. The author of one of these sites claimed to have received the information from Kodak directly.

According to his site, the Kodak emulsions you are asking are:

• number: 5030 = KodaColor II 100
• number: 5075 = EKTACHROME 40OX Professional

The Agfa XR 100 was comercially named Agfa Color XR 100

It's a great idea, however as I explained before, this informaition is not easy to come accross, apparently even the manufacturers not always have the technical documentation of many filmtypes. I will see what can be done to this respect and start with a table that contains the names of the emulsions we have in house. As well as any reliable information I can find on the internet.

About your feature requests, I will add it to the list of feature requests, please bear in mind that although we greatly appreciate all contributions from our customers, we can not guarantee all feature requests to be included in future versions of the software.

Thanks for your info and reply.
Also, you're right that it's very difficult to find information about the film types. In fact, I'm very surprised by the lack of method on the part of the manufacturers. They sold film for about 100 years and didn't bother to have simple technical naming schemes that could be used reliably. Inexcusable. It would have been so easy for them...

Well, any data you can gather during your normal work will be very useful for everyone.

Hi Alejandro,

I'm a newbie on this issue and found the thread by google. I want to scan very old family pictures (they are not _really_ old, of 1988) and I have the same problem. I dont find any table which informs me, which profile I have to use with Agfa Xr 100 for example. Did you make a table since May 2010 you spoke of in this thread, if yes, where is it, if no, why not?
If I (and other customers) make try & error for every unknown filmtype, it's an boring enterprise. I need no exact solution, but a hint, which profile does it best.

Unfortunately these film types are not always traceable.
Manufacturers tend to sell their films under various names in different countries and even vary the material they sell uner a certain name.
You can try looking up the film id number on Tom Philo's Homepage under "photo sources and tips" he got a lot of filmcodes listed.
There is also a site where you can look up the codes on the filmcase.

Hallo Arne,

da haben sich dann aber für mich die anfänglichen Vorteile von Silverfast (nach den ersten zufällig gefundenen Filmen) schon relativiert. Wenn ich nun irgendein Profil nehme für meinen Agfa oder auch irgendeinen nicht gefundenen Fuji, sehen die Bilder genauso schlecht aus wie in dem eigentlich mitgelieferten Scanprogramm.
Wenn ich da die immer unterschiedlichen Filme meines Vaters scannen will, muss ich wohl immer irgendein oder kein Profil nehmen und die Farben mit anderen Reglern.
Was da jetzt vermisse und wenn es wirklich fehlt und ich es nur nicht gefunden habe, dann ist es unverständlich, dass ich mir dann keine eigenen Profile zusammenbasteln kann. Wie gesagt: es geht nicht um einzelne Fotos, die super werden sollen, sondern viele, die einigermaßen schön werden sollen ohne großen Aufwand und ohne dass ich Filmfachmann werden will. Das scheint Silverfast zu leisten zu können, oder ?

If you want to create your own film profiles you need SilverFast Ai (studio) which has this capability.

ich habe doch Silverfast Ai Studio V. 6.6.2r3. Ich sehe hier nicht wie ich da meine Scaneinstellungen speichern kann.

Öffnen Sie das Pull-Down Menü und klicken Sie auf speichern.
