Epson v750 scanning 4x5 bw negatives

Hello,
I have just started using the Epson to scan 4x5 BW negatives ( Ilford Delta and Fp4) I notice on some negatives that "appear " to my eye to have obvious detail in brighter areas, the scan produces them as blown out highlights. Is there a way to address this? I tried various adjustments but it is as though the lighter areas are just not "seen" with much discrimination.

Dear Predstone,

quick question to help me understand. Are the blownout highlights in the negative or the positive result. I am trying to determine whether the areas you are looking at from the scan are black or "transparent" in the original.
