HDR colour & gamma setup

Postby tokoloshca » Tue May 13, 2003 5:36 pm

I need help setting up for colour in HDR.

After reading all Ian Lyons' tutorials, I'm still confused by the SF HDR setup - the IT-8 Calibration and Options settings and the gamma settings - perhaps you can spot my errors ?

Background info:

Photoshop 7
Adobe RGB(1998) space
Windows 98SE
Sprintscan 120 (& latest firmware) and all film holders including the Glass holder.
Silverfast Ai 6 & HDR 6
Polaroid Insight 5.5

I have used Ai to scan in 8(SF calls 36->24) & 16 (SF calls 48 bit col), using the CMS settings in these gif screenshots.
http://pacman.vosn.net/~fgross/miscellaneous/
I believe that I have this setup correctly - right ?

I used the C-ROES slide to do the IT-8 Calibration in Ai according to the tutorial. Is this IT-8 calib only good for Ai or does HDR use this too or must I do a separate calib for HDR?

Now here is where the problem originated - I found (after many communications from Lasersoft) that the Glass carrier is not supported by Silverfast and does NOT focus the scanner. So their suggestion, which I have followed, was to use Polaroid's Insight to scan and save the file as a 16 bit RAW file in TIF format. So far so good..... (The following would of course also be applicable if a RAW scan were done from SF Ai or any other scanner/software for that matter).

Now, I can either open this saved RAW 16 bit directly into Photoshop or, again at Lasersoft's suggestion, I now have HDR for this purpose. In HDR I go to the Open button and browse to where the 16 bit RAW file was saved and Open it giving me the Silverfast controls that I like ( the histogram sliders to set the end points, the col cast removal etc.).

But, my difficulties are:
IT-8 Calibration for HDR - I could scan this slide in SF Ai and the supported slide film holder and scan it as 16 bit (SF calls 48 bit HDR Colour). Save it to disc to open in HDR. In HDR select select Frame>Image Mode> 48 bit Colour ? Then Open button?

Before doing this RAW IT-8 target scan - go into the Ai Options>CMS settings and turn everything to OFF/to NONE.
Then...what....press the IT-8 button & browse to the it-8 reference file as i did before in Ai ?

Although it'd usually be kept UN-Checked I must now, for this IT-8 Calibration purpose only, have the "for HDR output box" Checked - right ?

And then, in HDR fill in the "Gamma in HDR data" box with 2.2 (my Ai Gamma setting) - right ? But this should normally have 1 inserted to balance the original Ai gamma setting ???

The HDR>Options General & CMS screenshots are shown in the above link.
The CMS>Scanner>Internal does not allow Calibration to be chosen - it is greyed out

Any clarification is welcomed - please email if you like.
Thank you
Frank
