I have been trying out the 48 bit colour option in Silverfast 5.2 which came with my Polaroid Sprintscan 120. When I scan the preview shows the negative as positive (since I have chosen negative from the general options). But when I do the actual scan it is always scanned in as a negative. This may not be a major problem since I can then invert in Photoshop but do I lose quality when using the invert command in Photoshop and why is this happening?

Other problem is that the positive image is very light (since the image scanned as a negative is clearly very dark). I have played around with changing the gamma from 1.8 to 2.20 and checking and unchecking the "Output for HDR" box but no major differences.

Does anyone have any suggestions and is it worth upgrading?

THanks Philip Flower

Philip,

When you chose to output the image in 48bit HDR mode it stays as a negative. You can do the inversion within Photoshop and then make your edits there. However, SilverFast 5.5 now includes the ability to scan and edit in 48 bit full colour mode and the image will be output as a fully corrected positive. If you're using a PC it's available now - if using Mac it could be a few days to a week away.
