very low quality scans with 2450

Hi, I have 2450 and SF5.5 on osX.2.4
I don't know why, but all the scans I try to make with the SF are having a very very poor quality. They are grainy and the colors are pretty off, to an extent that I can't correct it using SF (with the Photoshop controls, I can improve the situation, but also have to work very hard). When I scan using the original Epson scan software (the Epson Twain modul), I get impressive results. It seems to me weird to say the least.
Any ideas, anyone?
