I posted this and sent an email to LaserSoft awhile back but so far I'm not getting any help. Here's what I wrote two weeks ago followed by an update:

I need your assistance. I have an Epson Expression 636 and Silverfast CD with ver 3.x on it. My old computer has Silverfast updated to 4.2.7. I've copied those files over to my new XP system. It all opens
and loads except I can only get in in Demo Mode. It comes up with my registration number and asks me to put in my CD. When I put in my old CD it doesn't recognize it. I don't have a new CD because I downloaded that upgrade. What's the appropriate next step to be able to use my Silverfast w/o being in Demo Mode? Thanks for your help.

Since then I tried removing the 4.2.7 version and reinstalling the old version 3 from the CD thinking that would then be the correct serial number and would work and then maybe I could upgrade it to the newer version which I downloaded. But it won't let me install the old version from the CD at all. So I removed all trace of Silverfast and reinstalled the 4.2.7 again from a downloaded update (instead of copying from the old computer). It's fully functional except that it only will run in Demo mode. It wants me to insert a CD and since I downloaded the software when I paid for it I don't have the CD. There MUST be a way around this. I don't think the issue has anything to do with my using Windows XP.

Surely this is a simple matter of LaserSoft giving me a different registration number so I can use what I paid for. Does anyone have any other ideas? If LaserSoft is monitoring this could someone PLEASE help me? Thanks.

Put the old V3 CD in the tray but do NOT run the installer on that disk. Now run the installer for V4.x. It will check for a CD and should find that you have one ALREADY in the tray. Putting the CD in the tray "after the fact" will usually end up in failure to recognise it. It MUST be in the tray from the beginning.

Also rember if using PS6 it might not be possible get V4 to run as anything other than a demo. This was the case on mac versions but I can't recall if the PC versions where impacted in the same way. There is information on this matter available from the front page of this web site or from this link:

Ian:

Thanks for your response. I'll try what you suggested. I read over the info you suggested. It's so wierd because I had no problem running version 4.x with Photoshop 6 on my old system (win 98). It does sound like that's the problem though. I'll let you know if your suggestion worked or not.

Well I tried uninstalling and then putting the old CD in and reinstalling the new version. It doesn't even look for the CD during installation. It only asks for it once in Photoshop and it still won't accept it.

I had two thoughts. One was to check the registry entries on the old system to see if I could copy something over there. But there's no entries to copy.

The other thought was that LaserSoft is saying they don't support XP yet but to try the demo of version 5.5 and if it works then you can buy it knowing it'll work. Well...wouldn't that same theory go for version 4? The demo version works with XP in Photoshop 6 just fine. I've already bought it. What must I do to activate it?!!!!
