I'm scanning relatively flat 4x5 negatives on a v750 using SilverFast. The results are horendously contrasty and grainy. Any suggestions out there?
The scanner and the software are trying to 'improve' the negs for me. I just want the negs to be scanned the way they were shot... relatively flat.
Correcting the nasty curves after the prescan is giving me less than acceptable results.
If anyone has the time, suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
V750/SilverFast-way out in prescan
Dear Epson V750 users
you should be able to use the IT8 calibration feature with the SilverFast Ai version bundled with your scanner.
Please don't hesitate to contact support: https://www.silverfast.com/problemreport/en.html
Regarding negative "over-correction": Can it be that you draw a single scan frame around all images?
Best regards

I believe I need to upgrade to SilverFast Ai IT8 for calibration software.
Finding the upgrade via the SilverFast Ai introduction screen was a real challenge: The most convoluted web process I've ever experienced in my 15+ years on the web.
(I think SilverFast Ai is a great product once you get Taz Tally's book, but the web site content is very confusing.)

Dear customer
you don't need to buy an upgrade. Just to contact support:

Just to let you all know, the link that Mr Noak urges us to go to(instead of dealing with the problem here) is a page that has a feeble search tool BUT... a phone number to call for help that costs.... $1.99 per minute...
Sonny, are they not paying you enough...?
Back to the topic in question, you cannot, I repeat CANNOT use the calibration software with any IT8 card unless you pay for an upgrade. There is no calibration tool on my Silverfast Ai palette.
Instead of diverting us to your expensive help lines just tell it how it is, if we don't need the upgrade, prove it, tell us what to do, isn't that what forums are for...?
It seems obvious that Silverfast don't want to deal with Epson 750 owners because our software came bundled (free) and as I said above it's a poor half measure.
The best way to true and quick colour is to forget about Silverfast, just set the Epson software to 'no colour management' and just scan, the assign a profile (made using the monaco IT8 card & software) in P/shop, then convert to your colour working space...
I wait to be corrected....

Furthermore
This was taken from the PDF instruction manual. We DO NOT have the option to set 'calibration' under 'scanner>internal.
Calibrating your Scanner & Digital Camera with SilverFast IT8 Calibration
LaserSoft Imaging has successfully established its own IT8 target production. Many manufacturers are using LaserSoft Imaging's high quality targets for their world-wide production and are very pleased with the quality. LaserSoft Imaging has developed IT8 calibration for many years starting with the version 5.x up to today?s version 6.0 of SilverFast currently supplied in the market. This feature now supports all scanners and is compatible with SilverFast. IT8 Calibration is available with all SilverFast products except for SilverFastSE and can also be purchase as an upgrade.
Saving the ICC profile
After the calibration has been completed you will get the message
"Calbration has been successful".
The set up for a working colour palette is done in
"Options.../ CMS (Win: ICM) at colour management / Internal > Monitor"
and "Profiles for ColorSync / Intern"

As you probably know, the Epson V750 ships with Monaco EZ color, which is calibration software. Epson intended for you to use this software to calibrate your scanner. The SilverFast AI sofware included in this bundle does not include IT8 calibration. If you have further questions, please contact Epson or Monaco.
Ok so we are all back to square one then.
If we want to use IT8 calibration with silverfast, do we just buy your it8 cards (wasteful). Or pay for an upgraded Ai version with more features.
Why did the other Silverfast employer say we didn't need the upgrade.
Confused.
Also, why include your software when you don't want to deal with us quote:' if you have any more questions please contact Epson or Monaco'
I don't want to speak to them about your software, I want to speak to Silverfast about utilising IT8 calibration withing Ai, quite simple really.
Just give us a straight answer to a straight question: HOW MUCH IS THE UPGRADE TO USE IT8 CALIBRATION IN SILVERFAST AI...?

Hello Espon V750 users.
I bought a V750 Pro just a week ago and it looks like Lasersoft now offer a free upgrade to Silverfast AI 6.4 + IT8. I just had to register my serial number and I was directly offered to download the upgrade.
For those who bought the V750 after the first of november (like me) LSI also offers a free upgrade to the latest Silverfast AI 6.5 + IT8. The procedure is also simple : I just had to join a receipt of my scanner to an automatic mail generated by a link on the LSI website (unfortunately I can't remember exactly were was the link, but I can post a copy of the mail and the adress were it should be sent), then they sent me a new serial number and once I registered it I was able to download the latest version.
I don't know if this truely only apply to silverfast bundled version got after november 1st or if there is also some kind of offer to those who got their bundled version before this date.
Some words on the calibration procedure : the calibration can be done using the targets provided with Monaco Ezcolor (they respect IT8 standard) BUT since the calibration procedure needs a .txt reference file you can't use the reflective target because the reference file for it is not a .txt and it can't be easily converted to simple text (I tried).
I'm gonna ask Monaco if they can provide .txt reference file for their reflective target but i'm very unsure of the answer.
