SilverFast SE Crashes when scanning in PhotoshopCS3

Postby DavidAVogel » Wed May 16, 2007 1:21 pm

I can not imagine why LaserSoft is NOT SUPPORTING Photoshop CS3! Doesn't, I dunno, maybe 50% of your users work from the Photoshop plug-in for their Epson scanners?

I have an Epson 3200 Photo Scanner that came with a purchased copy of Silverfast SE as the operating software for scanning. Running on a Mac G5 in System 10.4.9. Worked fine in Photoshop CS, and PS CS2. Now even after installing the newest SilverFast plug-in for CS3- PHOTOSHOP CS3 CRASHES AFTER EVERY SCAN.

I'm going to uninstall all of my CS2 applications. (I don't have space for duplicate applications) I don't feel I should have to spend over $100 to upgrade ... and No, I DON'T WANT TO SCAN IN CS2, THEN OPEN IN CS3. One of the main advantages of the Silverfast plug-in was working entirely in Photoshop!

LASERSOFT: PLEASE PROVIDE A DOWNLOAD (FREE!) UPGRADE TO MAKE MY SCANNER WORK WITH PHOTOSHOP CS3!

Dear David,

first of all, you did multiple postings (four, probably unwanted), i deleted the duplicate ones.

On Topic:

I can not imagine why LaserSoft is NOT SUPPORTING Photoshop CS3!

We are supporting CS3 starting from version 6.50 !
We had a few bugs there that are solved almost completely by now and 6.50 users can download that version via free update !

I don't feel I should have to spend over $100 to upgrade

You don't have to !
A upgrade from an older SE Version (6.4xx ) just costs $30 via Web purchase !

PLEASE PROVIDE A DOWNLOAD (FREE!) UPGRADE

Please refrain from typing all uppercase, this is regarded as shouting.

Apart from that we will not offer a free upgrade.

That may sounds like a bad comparison to you, but just try to imagine someone wants a free upgrade from Windows 2000 to XP or from Mac OS 10.3 to 10.4 just because the latest version of his favourite Software does not run any more, this is nothing that will ever happen !

To "soften" the transition from older to newer versions we offer the upgrade fee of $30 instead of asking for the "full" $50 price.

We had to invest work to adapt to CS3 and we need some money back for it.

Also the 6.50 versions offer other benefits apart CS3 support ( Please see our website ).

Thank you & Greetings,

Thank you for the reply. While I appreciate your opinion, I still think you and LaserSoft are missing the point. I am a consumer, a customer. You seem to have no concept of customer service! I feel manpulated, and forced to purchase something I don't feel I should have to. Your policies have no regard for anyone who simply wants to keep their (purchased) machine running properly. I don't want to get EXTRA features that you seem to think justifies charging your consumers for an update or upgrade.

I purchased your product when I bought my scanner because the Epson company included it as the operating software for the scanner. I can only assume that LaserSoft did not give Epson the software for free. I don't agree with your premise for charging me more money to simply operate my scanner.

To reply your responses below:

Quote: I can not imagine why LaserSoft is NOT SUPPORTING Photoshop
CS3!
You say you are supporting PS CS3? If you were- I wouldn't have a problem at all. A free, downloadable update would show true support... just a fix to prevent crashes... not some new software with a myriad of new features. I don't want new features- I just want my scanner to continue operating.
Purchasing a new version at $30, $50, or $100 is NOT support.
We're just talking a patch- a fix that addresses the bug that crashes PSCS3.
"An upgrade from an older SE Version (6.4xx)" JUST costs $30..."
Well I don't have version 6.4 OR $30 to send you. The version I received with my scanner is Version 1.1.2., so I assume my only option from LaserSoft is to purchase 6.5 outright.

The comparison to a system upgrade like Windows 200 to XP or OS 10 Tiger to Panther is ludicrous. I receive FREE, downloadable updates to my Mac operating software on a regular basis. Those updates protect my investment in all of the other purchased applications. I was not FORCED to move from Tiger: All of my applications ran just fine because Apple provided regular FREE updates... and did not extort me for additional payment.

So my final questions for LaserSoft are:
1) How much is the total cost to update from my SilverFast SE Version 1.1.2 to SilverFast 6.5x?
2) Is purchase of SilverFast 6.5 the ONLY fix to keep Photoshop CS3 from crashing?
3) What do I have to do to uninstall / install 6.5?
4) What are you going to do for SilverFast users that don't want or need these new features and simply want to stay operational?

A solution that doesn't require sending LaserSoft additional money would be appreciated by many of your users.

Thank you.

What can I do?

Postby DavidAVogel » Fri May 18, 2007 6:02 pm

Mr Heidorn
I understand you are busy, and maybe haven't had time to respond to my (frustrated) letter above.

But I really have one main question-
If I spend the $30 to purchase Silverfast SE 6.5.? can you guarantee that it will operate my Epson Perfection 3200 scanner without crashing Photoshop CS3?

My specs once again:
1) Running Mac OS 10.4.9
2) Brand new copy of Photoshop CS3 Standard

I have alot of Photoshop work to do- and I can't practically run both versions of Photoshop (CS2 and CS3) at the same time.

Thank you for your advice.

(1) The upgrade from a 6.xx Version of SilverFast SE ( you stated 1.1.2 which isn't an existing version, so i assume that you have a 6.xx version ) costs $30 USD.

(2) while there may be 3'rd party / hacked solutions that i am not aware of, YES this is the solution we offer.

(3) to uninstall version 6.5. you can simple erase the files in your program folder/silverfast application that 6.5 installed. This is the usual way in OSX to "uninstall" Applications unlike on Windows...

(4) Users can still work with their scanners in "Standalone" Mode using the Launcher application and/or by using an older Photoshop Version.

Thank you & Greetings,
