Silverfast - PS CS3 - Leopard
SF does not work on an Intel Mac (Epson Perfection 4870 Photo) with MacOS 10.5.2 and Photoshop CS3. The Plugin and the standalone version freeze after the beginning of the scan.
Using Photoshop CS1 under Leopard there is no problem.
And the Silverfast staff does not answer on my problem that I wrote by using the thechnical support site since 2 weeks - nice support for the customers.

Same Problem
I am having the same issue with an Epson V750 scanner using an Intel MacPro, Mac OS 10/5.2 and Photoshop CS3. I also can't get Silverfast to work with the stand alone application. This is after upgrading Silverfast to 6.5.5r4.

freezing scanner epson 1680
my 1680 is doing the same thing. just upgraded to leopard, and downloaded the "demo" of Silverfast 6.5 just to make sure it wasn't because i was using the 6.4.x.x version.
same thing happens, it starts to scan, then hangs up, and the light goes out on the scanner.

silver fast hangs
I am on a mac pro dual 3.0 (1.5 years old) running Leopard 10.5.2. I have silver fast studio ai version 6.5.5r4. I am running an epson 10000xl connected firewire. I run through Photoshop CS3 10.0.1 and it hangs after a few scans, just like everyone else says. I also have another hard drive with Tiger 10.4.11 and Silverfast 6.5.5r2 and when I boot under this disk and use this version on the same version of photoshop, it is much better. I has hung once today but that is far better than the leopard version. I have several hundred scans to do and having to do them one at a time to protect against losing a batch really sucks. Has anyone found an answer?
Thanks,
Don

worked for me
found these instructions on the apple discussion board. looks like you have to uninstall the old epson driver, and reinstall the new one. i unistalled everthing, silverfast too, and started from scratch. witht he scanner unplugged while installing. everything works fine now!

I had a problem scanning with my all in one Epson CX6400 way back in January 2006. I just recently purchased an Epson V200 Photo scanner and discovered the scanning software would quit when run.
I remembered the problem with the CX6400 and managed to find the solution I used back then (luckily I had saved the solution to a file and found it using Spotlight).
As someone elsewhere suggested, you need to unistall the scanning software. The specifics of what to get rid of though were not specified. What follows is exactly what I did, and it worked. I can't recall when I got this solution from or I would give proper attribution.
To completely uninstall the scanner software please follow the steps
below.
UNINSTALL
To ensure that all Epson Scan files have been removed from the
system you would need to check for the following items in the Hard Drive. Pleasenote: Not all files and locations will be present. If you do not find one of the items listed, please continue on with the next step.
1. In HD (Hard Drive), APPLICATIONS - remove EPSON SCAN and
EPSON SCANNER MONITOR, if present
NOTE: If you receive an error that EPSON SCANNER MONITOR cannot
be deleted because it is in use, go into HD, APPLICATIONS, UTILITIES and open ACTIVITY MONITOR. Highlight the EPSON SCANNER MONITOR process and click on QUIT PROCESS to quit the process. Close ACTIVITY MONITOR. You can now go back into the APPLICATIONS folder and delete EPSON SCANNER MONITOR.
2. In HD, LIBRARY, APPLICATION SUPPORT - remove the EPSON SCANNER MODULE folder.
3. In HD, LIBRARY, IMAGE CAPTURE, TWAIN DATA SOURCES - remove the ".ds"
file bearing your scanner's name.
4. In HD, USERS, (YOUR USER NAME), LIBRARY, PREFERENCES - Open
the EPSON folder and then delete the EPSON SCAN folder.
REINSTALL
Once the removal is complete, restart your computer. After the
restart, follow the steps below to download and install the most current Epson Scan driver:
Please note: You will require Stuffit to install the Epson Scan software.
Stuffit is not installed by default on Tiger. If you are not able to install the software, please visit http://www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html to
download and install Stuffit.
1. Go to www.epson.com and select North America and then USA.
2. Click on DRIVERS AND SUPPORT, select your appropriate product
category and then select your product.
3. Select on MACINTOSH under DRIVERS AND DOWNLOADS and select
the most current version of the EPSON SCAN. Click on DOWNLOAD NOW,
respond to the question, and ACCEPT the licence agreement. The download will now begin.
4. Once the download is complete you will see a EPSONXXXX.SEA.HQX
(XXXX indicates the numbers you will see). Doubleclick on this, and it will
begin expanding the file and then place a EPSONXXXX.SEA icon on your
desktop.
5. Double click on this and click on CONTINUE and CONTINUE again. An installation will begin, and once it is finished, click on OK.
6. You will now see a folder on your DESKTOP labeled EPSONXXXX. Open this folder and double click on the EPSON SCAN INSTALLER. Enter your system password when prompted.
7. Once the EPSON SCAN INSTALLER screen appears, click on the dropdown
arrow beside EASY INSTALL and then select CUSTOM INSTALL.
8. Select only the scanner that you are installing, and then click on
INSTALL. Once the install is finished, click on QUIT.
NOTE: THE FOLLOWING IS FROM THE ORIGINAL STEPS. I HAD TO USE IMAGE CAPTURE FOR THE SCANNER TO WORK
To use the Epson Scan, please follow the steps below:
1. Launch Epson Scan by going into your HARD DRIVE, APPLICATIONS,
and EPSON SCAN.
2. If prompted, select your scanner from the list of models and click OK.
3. In the FILE SAVE SETTINGS window, you can designate the location,
name and type of file the scans will be saved as.
-LOCATION defaults to HD/USERS/(YOUR USER NAME)/PICTURES.
Click CHOOSE if you wish to change this.
-PREFIX determines how the scan will be named. Type any name you
like. You can also designate a start number.
-FILE TYPE dictates what format the scans will be saved in. ie. .JPG,
.TIFF, .PDF, or .PICT)

I tried your above suggestion (deleting the Epson software and then reinstalling) but that did not solve the problem with Silverfast. I can scan with the Epson software, including the photoshop plugin from Epson, but I cannot scan with Silverfast. So far LaserSoft support has only suggested deleting the Silverfast prefs file but that did not help.

Silvre Fast locks up computer
An update to my earlier posting. I was wrong, it is no better running under Tiger with 6.5.5r2 that it is under Leopard with 6.5.5r4. I can go about 5-10 scans and then it locks up and I have to reboot the scanner; use activity monitor to end photoshop and silverfast and then start all over. Sucks.

Dear rwittler
thank you for your follow-up :)
You seem to be referring to [Ticket2008022203943].
Well, your ticket's still open and waiting for the SF_Logfile that you were asked to sent on the 22nd.
Please help us to help you here. Usually problem that can occur at this level would also render the Epsonscan piece of software dysfunctional, so that definitely something we are interested in giving a close examination.
Thank you in anticipation of your kind co-operation :)

Please note that the email I received on 22 Feb did not ask me to send the SF_Logfile. Below is a copy of the email I received on 22 Feb. I received an email just today asking for a copy of the SF_Logfile which I will gladly provide when I get back home from work.
Dear Mr Wittler
the problem might be caused by an update which couldn't overwrite all older
files. With preferences left over from an older version that are in
incompatible format to the updated version, sometimes strange effects happen.
SilverFast does provide a set of secure settings. If it does not find a
"Prefs" folder when starting up, it generates a new one with these safe
values. Thus, please delete the Prefs folder (while SF isn't running) and
check whether this does improve the situation.
On a typical Mac OS X installation, the SilverFast "Prefs" folder is to be
found at:
/User/[your username]/Library/Preferences/LaserSoft Imaging/SilverFast/

No answer from the Silverfast support !!
I have contacted Lasersoft support about this problem too (Ticket 2008020603289) nearly one month ago and there was no answer until today. So I have SF version I paid for and it does not work and nobody from the company helps me.

Possible causes and solutions
Dear customers
In an effort to try to reproduce the problem mentioned here, we have tested our software with photoshop CS3 under Leopard in connection with many different scanners. Unfortunately, up to this point we have not been able to reproduce the problem reported by many in this forum.
As beatricethecat correctly pointed out in her posting, there is a thread in the mac forums that might help to improve this issue. Please check http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jsp ... D=6204509&
We strongly believe that one of the reasons why we could not reproduce the problem, was the kind of installation of the operating system. We carried out a fresh installation of Leopard, instead of installing it as an update over a previous version of MAC OS X. If you installed Leopard as an update over a previous version of the operating system, it might lead to unstable results and similar problems to the one presented in this thread.
In this case it would be advisable to make a clear installation of the operating system (including the updates).
Also a complete update of Photoshop CS3 and the latest version of the scanner driver would be necessary.
Thanks for your attention
