Silverfast - PS CS3 - Leopard
Can you explain why a fresh install would make a difference with the Silverfast software not working? I am using a new Intel MacPro so it was not an upgrade of the system software. I could get Silverfast to work on my previous Mac, a dual G5 processor, with a system upgrade. It is when I switched to the Intel MacPro that the problem surfaced.

Erratic behavior
Since we have not been able to reproduce the problem on our test center, it is difficult for us to tell what exactly is causing it. So we have to try to find and mention common causes for this kind of behavior.
Our mac expert tells me, it is well known that this kind of OS update installations can lead to erratic behaviour with different applications. hence the importance of mentioning this posible cause. As well as the updates for Photoshop and SilverFast.
As everybody mentioned before, SilverFast works as a standalone software, the problem appears when it is called from photoshop, so we can not completely exclude that the problem might lie in the host program. Therefore it is recommended to update photoshop as well.
Another possible cause might be the firmware of the scanner, it would also be advisable to update it.
to rwittler, the same reason exposed in my first paragraph make hard for me to give you a concrete answer to your questions, however you could check the firmware of your scanner and try updating photoshop CS 3 in an attempt to correct this issue.
If you still have the same problem, I would suggest you to open a ticket on our support site for a test with a detailed explanation of the problem and mentioning this forum and the things you have done to try to correct the problem. You will receive an authomatic answer with some instructions, as an answer to that you can send a zipped copy of the "prefs" folder.
Many thanks for your attention

As you can see from the original post by Turner the problem also occurs with the standalone version of Silverfast. Beatricethecat posted that she went back to Silverfast version 6.4.4r7a in order to get Silverfast to work. I have already contacted Silverfast support and yesterday I sent them the information from the System Profiler software for the Epson V750 scanner that I am using.

Cure?
Initially, I had the same problem as the OP but I fixed it by setting Photoshop CS3 to launch in Rosetta, whereupon Silverfast suddenly worked fine. Then I quit Photoshop, unchecked the Rosetta option and launched again and Silverfast continued to work fine.
I have no idea what logic there is to this workaround but it worked for me on an Intel Alu iMac running Os 10.5.2.

still some problems with hangups
hi everyone again. still running leopard on a macbook 2.33Ghz.
i ended up upgrading to 6.5.x because the 6.4 in lepoard would do reflective ok, but not b&w negatives. but even in 6.5.x (just downloded the new upgrade yesterday), the scanner scans ok a few times, then locks up or hangs. and, interestingly, it seems to do this in completely different ways depending on if i launch from the "silverfast universal" launcher or the old version of the launcher (i have a nikon 9000 hooked up running the 6.4.x version of that software). Also, i've noticed that sometimes an extra somthing opens up when i open up the scanner software, in the dock a square with an 'A" in it opens up, and its called something like sssfexe. it lives in the contents of the scanner plugin. i've tried throwing it away, and it stays away for awhile but then reappears. it causes problems i think.
anyway, i'm going try de-installing and reinstalling both scanner drivers and see if that helps, but if anyone knows anything abou thtis mysterious sssfexe file, i'd be glad to

I too am still having problems with SilverFast and 10.5.2 on an Intel Mac Pro. I thought perhaps upgrading from 6.5.4r4 to 6.5.5r2 would help and it did a little, but after a scan, if I switch to a different app and then back to SilverFast sometimes the Control panel will be gone and often SilverFast will think my scanner is no longer connected.
I'm quite surprised that no one at LaserSoft is able to reproduce any of these issues.
Everything worked fine for me on a PPC machine under Tiger using many different versions of SF.
I'll have to send another message to LS's supper staff.

Still No Solution
I was hoping that updating to version 6.6.09v1 would fix the problem but no such luck. No help with the new version.

Silverfast 6.6 - PS CS3 - Leopard
I was very happy to see that Lasersoft placed a new version 6.6 of Silverfast for Epson scanners working now under MacOS 10.5 Leopard. Today I tried the new version with my Epson Photo 4870 but it is still not working under Leopard and Photoshop CS3. After the scan process Silverfast is stopping and that was it. I had to terminate Silverfast and Photoshop by force.
So I made the experience that marketing and a working software are two different things. Since more than 6 months I am no waiting for a working version of Silverfast for Leopard and Photoshop CS3. And than Lasersoft is coming with a version which solves no problem at all. And they call it "Silverfast Universal" but it is only a PPC-program.

I've some small Questions for who has currently a problem with CS3 / Leopard / SilverFast on Multicore systems :
Do you use a Wacom Tablet ? When which one ?
Do you have the Logitech Control Center installed, maybe first on Tiger, then made an update to Leopard ?
Is the Adobe Version CUE CS3 installed ?
What other Systemsettings do you have ?
Thanks for your patience,
Kristian Kratzenstein

Dear Bob,
Could you send a system profiler text file to our support adress (with your ticket ID) ?
I have a costumer, who has two macs with same hardware but different installed software. On one computer silverfast works, on the other not. Maybe I could find similar installation on the Macs with the problem.
kind regards,
Kristian Kratzenstein
